(High RMS with fat sub and crispy highs, I dont care about dynamics)

You program your sounds from the very beginning for this type of job, use submix busses and send the subs directly to master output without squashing them as you'll do with the rest of the mix. Ah yeah, lots of parallel processing.

What is the absurd reason that leads an artist to play in this way ??

I saturate and compress everything just a bit in the mixdown. In the mastering I use a crapload of plugs all just squashig a lil bit. I dont try to do it all in one plug. I have 3 limiters in my mastering chain. For fat bass? Tape emus. I find that if I hit the limiters hard with my kik, snare and subs when the chain grabs the track and squashes it they all even out and get super fat...Also eq is important. play some tracks that you want to sound close to and look at (or just rip and match) the spectrum curve

EQ tips for fat rumble bass : de-mud all tracks not needing bass (EQ down low mids and/or low cut)

Kick : short, low mids only (no bass) and punchy.

With all the low mids you gained on all tracks, there is enough energy left for sub bass rumble ;)

Mixing such extreme music is an energy balance : squeeze out low mids/bass on everything not needing it. So you get enough energy left for the bass.

With a multiband limiter on master , you can gain a lot of high/mids crispness by controlling final balance.
It is not my way, but it works ;)

My clients usually demand special saturation treatment, i always tell em its a lot of work and charge the shit out of it.
I think i may have to move to a different country now, somehow they found out i use the free cubase plugin for that shit.

The Glitch mob using an insane amount of compression and limiting to shape their sound.
Maybe this will help u on your way.

Not to be a diick about it , i like fat beats too. But not caring about dynamics is just plain silly.
I would recommend you listen to some other genres ( i presume u make some kind of EDM)
Listen to some hiphop for instance, just for fun check out Army of the Pharaos. Some ruff loud sh** right there.
Or dare i say it......Kanye's Yeesus album. Don't get me wrong i'm not particullary a fan. But that albums mix is amazing.
And very loud according to my neighbours.

I'd rather clearly hear my bass and kick instead of a steady rumble that probably kills your speaker.
Perhaps it's better to havesome dynamics but lots of distortion........so u get that loud overkilled feeling?

Hardly in ass kickin lows in either of the tracks to me. It sounds like all mids and highs (though not bad), just needs some deepness. HIghtpass madness?

    good point
I highpass everything haha. When I add the SUb, everything sounds good, but when I add volume to the sub It sounds distorted. IDK why.

I have this issue sometimes. Mix has good level, punch etc (-15 rms most of the time), then when I put some level/gain at the mastering stage, the sub region sounds distorted on some playbacks (especially flat ones, sounds great on HS50+sub kit or bassy Headset or Adam SAs) even if the sub ind. track was at -9dbfs before mastering.
Still didn't managed to get it right. Seeing some posts here, I'm starting to think the cause might be my (your) subs are squashed? To make a sub sounds even I use volume automations to match dbFS then limit the shit out of it with ultra slow settings (IQ Limiter) to keep a constant volume flow. I don't know...
I'm gonna try rooting the sub right to the master (is rooting to an empty group enough? I fear PDC doing his shit :snuffy:) without any comp/limit process, just to check, but then how do I make it even?
Volume autos aren't enough and thingies like Bass Rider never got me good results... Any ideas?

Sub use a LOT of energy.

To me, it needs to be :
-above 40Hz (because most systems can't go lower AND you get more energy)

-pure sine wave, because when you saturate a sine...it is not a sub sine wave anymore ;)
That's why when you do a sub bass wobble, you need to separate sub sine wave and do a simple volume modulation, AND you can use a low pass on the rest of the bass.

Saturating a sub is nonsense, because it is not a sub anymore, generating harmonics in the "main" bass domain.
If you want to go that way, it is more a kind of saturated 808-like than a real sub to me. And it replace the whole kick "energy"

    There are two options :
-sub is here-and there, so it can be mixed very low, to do a subtle "rumble" "rattling" in complement to the kick
-sub is very present all over the song, so you need to make room for it : kick with no sub, only low mids "punch", and bass low mids only

To me, a sub don't really need to be heard, but more on the "feeling" side :mates:
