I had a few issues with 8.1 which led me to upgrade, or to be more precise to reformat and install 10 instead. Not suggesting that you should/need to do the same but in my case it solved a few problem.

Well now I need to reinstall 10 because it keeps asking me to activate despite that it was already KMS activated a long time ago.

 

I don't think that changing OS will solve anything: We just live in a time where some individuals will stop at nothing to make money, even and especially if it means killing someone else.

Being open source will not change anything to this: People are the problem.

I can do Bitwig in Ubuntu Studio and Kubuntu (laugh all you want, it's awesome) but I can't use my Maschine or 75% of my plugins.

 

Was the one you installed forcing you to upgrade at any time of its choosing, forcing unwanted behavior etc ?
Or the version you installed had this preemptively disabled ?

Had a cheap laptop with Windows 10 on it.. that was forcing me to wait for its self decided update, and I just pulled the plug on it
and ripped the hdd out of it at that point... I have no more patience for Bill's nonsense

nothing to laugh about good sir... once a Linux distro can do everything with ease the way
I can in Win at the moment...same functionality, I am gone from Bill's shackles..
waiting for the day.. but sadly will not do so at the expense of not being able to use Reaper
as I have become accustomed now

If you don't have any of these, download the March, 2017 Security Only Quality Update for Windows 8.1 (KB4012213) for 32-bit or 64-bit.

This is from askwoody.com. His MS-DEFCON system is usually on top of Windows updates and their effects.

 

Some last month's updates, tagged as security updates, were designed to find "tampering with windows registration" etc. Uninstalling those updates and re-running kms will most likely solve this.
