Totally love Andrew Scheps' Punkerpad Studio setup. That rack is immense, with a lot of it coming from Sun City Studios and Motown Studios, so is classic vintage stuff. I believe he wanted the Neve 8028 console desk from Sun City Studios too, but Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters got in there before him.

I've got around 1/16 of it + console and I think it's enough. But this is definitely nice to look at. Even better - play with it for a couple of... years?

Didn't he go totally ITB for mixing a few years ago?

Yeah. Scheps is now regarded as ITB, but in reality the pros call it ITB if about 80/90% of their work is done ITB. I read somewhere recently that he has a deep mistrust of ADDA converters and still does about 10-15% of his work using outboard gear.

With gear like that, recent plugins must be pretty close for Mr. Scheps to use only a few key pieces of hardware.

I love how he has so much gear nobody has spotted his alien hiding in amongst it yet

I think the original pic above is an older setup too. Looking at this there is some newer gear in there, like the to Empirical Labs Distressors under the Eventide Hamoniser (?)

On the table? Lol, hes so baddassed he uses 500 rack modules for paper weights and coasters.

I love how everyone uses the lights from the power conditioners for hanging all kinds of things

    This is a paradox.

To me ITB sounds very good, but the 2nd mix just breaths more, listen to the reverb on vocals and snare that comes to life, sounds even better than ITB.

Without even looking that closely, I can see I have at least 5 of those items.

I have the yellow, green, blue and red patch cables, oh and the Axminster carpet too.

Thanks for that video Herr Durr, I'm not sure it proves your point though :P The hardware version sounded so much better to me!

You're right VS, I don't think there is any comparison. The first one doesn't have the separation, character, depth or clarity of the second one!

I 'll have to agree with V.Steyr and Sylenth. He did a very good job with his ITB mix. The APi mix though, sounds fuller, fatter and more lively, bringing out better the instruments and vocals. And to my ears, the API mix itself is not even as balanced as the ITB mix is, but still wins easily.

So, you say that analog is much better than ITB mix, but he mixed with limited quantity of plugins - UAD only. So, what is UAD? It's just plugins among other plugins. What if he used more than uad stuff? Tdr, dmg, plugin alliance, waves, black rooster, Airwindows, voxengo, izotope, Valhalla, melda, sonimus, flux, Cytomic, Acqua, nebula, Ploytec ism aroma, kush, slyfi, Mcdsp, fielding dsp reviver, Ik t-racks, D16, boz, Slate, u-he, urs, variety of sound, hofa, abbey road stuff, softube, 112db, psp audioware, acon, fab filter, lexicon, Liquidsonics, tc electronic, zynaptiq, Soundtoys, sonic Oxford, plpareq, Volko, sonalksis, soundradix, sonoris, overtone dsp, DrMS, Toneboosters, NI, Apqualizr, Cakewalk, blue cat audio, ddmf, Audiothing, audiority, positive grid, algorithmix, Harrison mixbus, and many other ones? Uad is not the best top, it is among excellent plugins. Uad does unique, but doesn't do what other do unique.

With plugins you can do more, go into surgical area and give more clarity and depth or oversaturate, or make cleaner or more. Sound is just harmonics with amplitude behaving in time domain. For this time analog becomes simply achieved by digital. Not close maybe, but needs these closeness. There are no standards for closeness as analog. People listen to music and sound quality. Who cares digital or analog. If it is good, it's good. Or fuck the sound, we measure harmonics and achieve analog?
Subtleties...it is not fundamental..it is colour and spices. Both achievable in analog and digital.
