Actually, My friend, it was a little of all you mentioned. First I make music because that's what I enjoy. It is always good to step outside of your box/comfort zone. Exposure to the unfamiliar is the best way to learn. There are times that I just go with what mood strikes me at the moment. You have to be yourself first and foremost. You cannot make something that you are not comfortable with. if you force it, it won't work. doesn't for me anyway. creativity and that elusive muse are sometimes hard to harness so to speak, I grab hold when I can and Hold on for as long as I can and produce whatever it is that is flowing through my brain at the moment. My last Album was a Dark Ambient Project, I'm in a rut/Writer's block zone right now, but am trending towards a genre that I have never produced before.

It has allowed me to make inroads past the writer's block that has been plaguing me for many many months. So I don't think you can become locked into any one genre.

I asked about possible new genres cause I haven't listened to new music too much for the last couple of years, and I remember having read (maybe 5 years ago) in SoundOnSounds or somewhere, that "there are new software tools that will lead to creating new genres".
I was curious if there are some new good music directions that emerged while I've been not familiarized with new music/releases/artists etc..

Also, it would be cool if I could find some good fresh musical directions which inspire me (so if you know some good creative/fresh tracks, feel free to post them here)

Been listening to GRiZ's new album and he is definitely pushing the boundaries with this "Future" stuff right now. It's got blues, funk, hip-hop, soul, trap, reggae and dubstep influences, but current. He plays the sax as well (some mean horn stacks in his tracks). Good music!
    Heres a taste..

Definitely, give the whole album a listen. He's giving it away free on his website
