My point earlier was that, since around the 1950s the sheeple have been leaving school not being able to read and write properly. It's not their fault. So I was not having a dig at the OP; I was expressing angst at the deliberate dumbing-down of education. Now, about excusing things done wrongly or badly, no, I won't accept that. We have languages on this planet wherein words are spelt in certain ways. There is no room for debate. If you write 'your' when you actually mean 'you're,' it is simply wrong. It's as wrong as trying to hang a pair of trainers off your ears instead of wearing them on your feet. Yes, language evolves, meanings change, and even spellings have changed over time, but our dictionaries have kept up with the changes, and I can't find any dictionary entry where to also means too. I've forgotten your name, but you are a bad influence. Stop telling people they are right to be wrong.

At least not for all languages as you imply.

For German language e.g., there is no binding grammer or spelling. There have been a lot of "Reformations" of the German language spelling in the last decades, but none of them was or is binding individuals (rules only apply to government officers in a wider meaning). The only "Legislator" of the German language are the German speaking people.

As for UK English it may be another way, or for US English. And I'm quite sure for the myriad of the rest of human languages it's more complex than you say

Touchscreens and autocorrect is the demise of proper grammar and spelling. When I used to have a blackberry smartphone and PDA before that, I was a precise speller. Now we just mumble and hit send.

I have friends that are from other countries and their english isnt the clearest. But tell me this. When they use ok google or siri, they can speak perfect english to use their phones......lol

I made this post whenever... some time last week. Forgot about it, then remembered it yesterday when I was reading something else... was amused by what it was then... and am now highly entertained at where it is now.

Given the price of good books it is possible the lack of reading is due to other financial priorities so in the spirit of this site here are some links to some free pdf file versions of books you can download and thus start your own library.

Such a library can be a nice free Christmas gift for that ignorant savage you hope to enlighten. Instead of giving people a hard time give away free books. Be the change you want to see in the world.

Want to find a book online then always search online using the authors name the title of the book and .pdf at the end to see if it is stored on someones website or free file storage. In simple terms this is what I said.

If someone walks into a movie theatre you happen to be in holding a sign that says.

"THE BUILDING IS ON FYRE,. GIT OUT NAW"

Some people will read that and get up (I would,) the message is clear enough for me.

In some strange Monty Python universe a few would get up heckle the messenger for his lack of communication skills. Then pat themselves upon the back for being smart and having caught him out on his poor execution of signage and how the the world is so much better for them having been born. All the while they are taking the piss, the theater burns down around them.

I think people should do their best to communicate in text in a proper and accepted manner, though I can no condone condescending trolls who notice what I assume everyone else has and make light of a message due some unfortunate mechanical or spelling errors. If we were in a court of law, or this was a contract then exactitude would be in order. However, the motivation to correct someone's spelling on the internet is rarely is ever altruistic. In most cases it borders on bullying.

This has nothing to do with education, or the education system. I do agree, that in my view our institutions have somewhat diminished and lowered their standards. Though I do not agree that a misspelled word or improper grammar is always because of a poor education. I do not need to make that assumption either, for or against the original poster's education, because in my post it was not relevant. The intent of the corrections and his ability to transmit his message were the only things I was commenting on.

Being able to spell is now understood be akin to having ear lobes, rolling your tongue, or being able to dislocate your thumbs. We should all do the best we can, but the act of looking down on someone (especially on the internet) because they have on correctly used the preposition 'to' rather than the adverb 'too' is pointless. Most people who can not spell have their brain auto correct things for them when it wishes to move onto other things. Our brains lie to us to get what they want, those people are so smart they do not even see the mistake until it is pointed out, or a good amount of time has passed and they come back to it.

The same thing happens when you are mixing as song or recording a song, after a while it will sound just as you imagined - perfect. Come back to it a week later and you wonder what on Earth you were thinking of when you saved the equivalent of the auditory recording of a feline orgy and thought it a masterpiece.


I digress, but I stand by my original post; do the best you can in life but please do take a broader of view of things sometimes. So many people in our time are unable to see the forest for the trees and that is something I just can not get behind either. I do agree to disagree with you though on whatever you like.

Not really. As far as I know if you want to read a book, access to its entire content you still have to read it. Watching a resume of it on youtube or reading it on wikipedia doesn't cut it and isn't the same. Reading no matter if you do it on a ebook a real book or whatever is still different than not reading, there isn't a way around it. I can tell when I talk to someone about an author I read, if he/she read it or not or if he/she is just spitting out clichés on the matter.
Booksmart isn't an insult, but not reading also isn't the end of the world. To each his own, like one of our forum member's always says, anyone can embrace lack of knowledge and culture if they enjoy it.

And since when promoting reading became a "hipster" sin ? Don't religious people believe in reading their sacred books ? You never read "read the f....g manual" ?
