    I've heard that manufacturer malware was the problem with these synths, not time bombs...

    I believe it still calls home. Just block your daw using LittleSnitch or disconnect internet while you make music.

    I would assume that he still hates warez as much as he used to, so there's no reason to assume that his stuff is clean.

    Anyway, there's a million other synths that you don't have to worry about using that are available next door, why take the risk.

    Even when blocking my daw his stuff always disappeared after awhile i always assumed it was after i connected machine to internet, could be wrong though, could be time bomb.
