Can someone please tell me what causes this? Not a shelf but a wall!? This eq curve is from a Zomboy track that was just released
I wouldnt say that I see it only on mainstream artists but random "established" artists in all different genres.
So one part of me wants to believe its caused by some magical mastering studio hardware mojo that Ill never be able to afford.
But then I come back to earth and reality and say its probably from some kind of dithering or youtube filtering, lol.
So what is it?

It's a bandpass filter implemented by most lossy audio formats, especially MP3.

Lossy codecs like mp3.
If you see there some small "sound" appearing fast and dissappearing fast after mp3 cut, like in your screenshot - it is possibly distortion, caused by additional clipping after mp3 conversion, peaks grew above 0dB. That's is why you need more ceiling before conversion. -1dB peak for example..after mp3 conversion peaks are mostly between -1dB and 0dB.

Download lossless version, such as flac, alac.
Then match.

It's just bandpass filter from lossy format (most likely mp3, looking at the frequencies that are cut, most of the time mp3 = from 16k (very low) to 18k (high)). You can also actually see the dithering applied too, without it, the cutted region would be to -inf dbFS, instead of this "weird" (but normal) levels.

You'll see this on EVERY lossy format. A lossless format will give you full (or close to) 20-20k hz information.

How do you think mp3 or other lossy format manages to drastically reduce file size? By deleting parts of frequency spectrum. (and compressing the rest)

I noticed the same thing happens in very low frequencies: under 20Hz most of the time, you can see quick, small fractions on any visual eq. this happens even when i use Ozone's eq (or any actually) with a very strong high pass cut around 20-25 Hz, and even on .wav

This meme just won this internet in audio circles. Too em'effin funny!

 

I just found the whole monstercat collection in flac. Should be good for ripping eqs from for EDM. Covers all the trendy genres. Now if damn ozone7s eq just saved the filters like ozone5 I would be really happy. I guess I could save every rip as a preset but Id still have to recapture the target curve every time I loaded up a new preset working on a new track. Come on izotope, it was so nice having a collection of curves like ozone5 that you could audition on your mixes with just a click.
When I did my little eq matching shootout between, pro q2, ozone5 and 7. 7 got me the best sounding results.

Actually not quite. Opus has very wide pass-band even on very small bit rates (64kbit stereo), retaining all frequencies up to 20kHz. At 128kbps it's virtually subjectively lossless, unlike majority of other lossy codecs, which at 128kbps puts out lots of audible artifacts, MP3 included.

That's why I generally advice on avoiding MP3 format whereever possible - it's a REALLY poor indicator of quality lossy compression at moderate bit rates which only give lossy formats bad reputation.

yes, (also) everytime you convert to 128kbps and 192kbps mp3 you get the "throw out the FFT data not needed in order to make filesize small" codec algo.
But you are removing everything above 16k in order to avoid fold-over aliasing?

 

eq matching is weak
