Can anyone recommend any good audio visualization plugins/standalones?
I have already purchased Aeon by Soundspectrum (big mistake) and downloaded winamp's own milkdrop but they are not good enough quality wise for my liking...

is there anything out there at the moment that will blow my mind?

If seen some pretty awesome ones at some clubs on the big screens.
The best one i seen was of this one that was like a cartoon.. you followed this gecko chase after some tail and the background was distorted/warped to the music. Looked pretty bitchin..
The cool thing was that the gecko would interact with the background/surroundings.. so when you got some phat bass hit the ground would swell up and the gecko would have to jump over the swellings parts of the ground.

It depend what do you want with video?
realtime/differed? (you can look : Resolume, Arkaos, Elektronica, Modul8 on mac)
creation/playing? (AfterFX, Pinacle, Avide, Sony...or VLC for playing, and for cut scene : virtualdubmod)
or just visualisation, abstract like Winamp? (it very easy)

    If you have question ;)

I use Resolume+Arkaos and MAX Jitter. That's all there is.

You can download and try VisualJockey, it's free.

    homepage

    it's fast editable and realtime.

Or TouchDesigner, but it's more difficult to use....

I VJ with Resolume. Never used Modul8, but I hear good things about it.

In Resolume, you can set parameters to react to incoming audio, choosing the frequency range it responds to, or synch it to BPM. You can hook it up to MIDI and play it live if you use Ableton or whatever. I recommend making your own videos, but that's just me. It's the same reason you don't use presets, pretty much everyone has access to them, but if you make your own you can get exactly what you want and it'll be completely original. Resolume also has VST support, so if you use videos with sound in them then you can mix the video and audio all inside the one program. Very intuitive software.

From my point of view VJ basically comes in a few parts.
The first part is to collect the fundamental data for let's say each song you want to visualice.
The second part is about to find a bit of a link between the music, the visual and a flow.
The third part is about to connect the "visual meltdown" with effects, such as fade in and out at the right place (always in sync with the music, so it kind of fits the intro(often used less times), build-ups, bridges, beats, breaksbeats, momentum and outros(also used very few times).

When the third part is working well and you've got a feeling for the music, the visual and it feels okay. Then there is time to move on to the "fun part".
The fourth part is about to add special effects that are linked to special "happenings" in a music. Like you want to chain a mouth saying, "let the beat control your body". The composite part is what "kicks in" here.

Here is your freeframe to make transmissions, transformations and yes just add the small bits, to make your set stand out just that extra bit(often also what define your signature).

VJ'ing is also about to control somewhat external sources, such as stroboscope, lasers, fogmachines, headlights.. and god knows what you wish to include on stage. Just as with the video stuff you project, it's important to keep it simple and not just blast on to its ultimate high. That will just confuse the people.
But yeah, it's hard to really know what's "best", because we have so many different needs and yes way way different ways we work, what tools we need etc. From the very experience I have from VJ'ing(never said anything about dj'ing because there I suck hah), it's always good to keep it simple, small and go from little to bigger. Don't be afraid to look at the club what kind of equipment they have ;) I mean whenever I see an effect I'd love to have, I look for it. Even if it has me to walk to that foggy place to talk to the visual guy.

Okay I hope this shred some light.
    -Have a nice day!

I'm a bit late replying here, but I make some realtime 3D music visualisation software called Morphyre.

It produces a different style of visuals to some of the other things mentioned here, and the pro version runs standalone and adds most of the scenes from the R4 Visualiser which I know has been used at a whole load of clubs.

You can get the demo here

If you don't think it's suitable, I'd be interested to hear why... I'm always trying to improve.

I know this is an old thread, but for visualization(not VJing) Plane9 does pretty good job.

I donĀ“t have it anymore since downed to 7 from 10. But what i recall, you select scenes, select duration, crossfade, shuffle and render it with the audio sync. The only problem was with size, it would never stop rendering, i lefted it rendering whole night and had to forced to stop. I think 8gb size and long as hell, I had to edit it
