Changing a sound is all about manipulating the attack, adding or subtracting harmonics and either shortening or elongating the sustain/release. Add effects to your liking and thats pretty much it....

You could do that with reverb and a resonator plugin which would, like Moogerfooger said, add/remove harmonics. Reversing the vocals and warping always helps add to the ambient effect. With your example, I would also sidechain a second track with some kind of stringed instrument to the original FX'd vocal and mix the sounds together. Lexicon's ResonantChords and StringBox do similar effects but more dramatically. I like just using Audio Damage's Eos and Live's Resonator.

It pretty much just sounds like a 100% wet reverb drenched vocal sample. Plenty out vocal sample libraries out there here. But I'm on an iPhone so I'm prob not hearing the details...

You can find a vocal sample that suits and throw it in a sampler. I think the main effect is amplitude modulation.. a ton of reverb and filter.
Or open Exhale if you have it.. tried some random presets (airy/ warm) - with a few tweaks sounded really close.. ;)

did you use the same techniques they said at the top and threw in exhale, or did you just use exhale?

AFAIK you can't drop your samples in Exhale (easily). Correct me if I'm wrong - I'll be vry happy.. I even don't use it. Just remembered that it has rhythmic patterns, which IMO is the point of this sound. But you'll never be able to get very close to the exact sound without very similar sample to start with.. I'll try some tricks tomorrow. ;)

p.s. take seriously the techniques described - this guys know what they are talking about

I didn't even know it was possible to drop samples in it, ain't it a Kontakt plugin. And if you can how do you do it?

Like I said, Exhale is not made to accept your own samples. There is a theoretical possibility (Output guys confirmed), but you should dig down to .ncw (compressed) files and do some kind of conversion wizardry.. never did it.
I don't get this one. you can import samples in Evoxa, for example

BTW I was checking Form in Reaktor and came out with this (1st 2 bars):

This wasn't treated with any eq and stuff, just Form and some additional reverb. Maybe one could get close /w additional processing and especially right sample to start with. Interesting instrument though. Hours of fun (if you have 'em)

You could make a similar effect by chopping and exporting a short male vocal sample singing a note, then loading it into a sampler like Kontakt. From there you can change the ADSR settings to be short and blippy like that then program your melody/ rhythm in MIDI.

After that you could make it more ambient sounding by filtering out some of the high end from say 2khz-ish upwards, adding a delay effect and a shimmery, medium to long reverb to give the notes more sustain and shimmery-ness and putting them in the back of the mix. Hope that helps. Give it a search on Youtube, I'm sure you'll find something similar.

You could then blend that sound with a synth using a filtered saw wave for more of that gritty vocoder-esque sound... or even just use a vocoder, but I think manipulating a sample like that might get you a more interesting, unique sound.

    Hope that helps! :)
