How can you play such Stuff at age 7?
Do they get the emotional catch of that? Are you aware enough to feel that music at that age?
I was barely aware of myself at that age....I only have single memories....more general and constant memories as awarness of myself started at around 9 or 10 i think.....

    Virtuoso -
    A virtuoso (from
Italian virtuoso [virˈtwoːzo] or [virtuˈoːso], "virtuous", Late Latin virtuosus, Latin virtus, "virtue", "excellence", "skill", or "manliness") is an individual who possesses outstanding technical ability in a particular art or field such as fine arts, music, singing, playing a musical instrument, or composition.[1] This word also refers to a person who has cultivated appreciation of artistic excellence, either as a connoisseur or collector. The plural form of virtuoso is either virtuosi or the Anglicisation, virtuosos, and the feminine forms are virtuosa and virtuose.

According to Music in the Western civilization by Piero Weiss and Richard Taruskin:[2]

...a virtuoso was, originally, a highly accomplished musician, but by the nineteenth century the term had become restricted to performers, both vocal and instrumental, whose technical accomplishments were so pronounced as to dazzle the public.

The defining element of virtuosity is the performance ability of the musician in question, who is capable of displaying feats of skill well above the average performer.

Especially in music, both critics and musicians have mixed opinions on virtuosity. While the skill implied is clearly positive, musicians focused on virtuosity have been criticized for overlooking substance and emotion in favor of raw technical prowess.[3]

More commonly applied in the context of the fine arts, the term can also refer to a 'master' or 'ace' who excels technically within any particular field or area of human knowledge—anyone especially or dazzlingly skilled at what they do.[1] For instance, Ken Jennings' initial success on Jeopardy was described as a "virtuoso performance.[4]"

The Italian term "virtuoso" was also once commonly used to describe the group of emerging ballistic experts, engineers, artillerists, and specialists in mechanics and dynamics that arose during the late 17th century in response to the spreading use of gunpowder in Europe.

I pity those kids. Just born, their money-grubbing parents let them train 10 hours a day until they are presented to the public. Take the first one, Brianna Kahane, as an example. Reading thinks like
"When she was 2 years old, she recognized a piece of classical music playing in a department store. That's when Brianna's mother realized her daughter had a special ear."
    or
"I do not remember a single day without music"
tells enough about her "childhood". She is 15 now, btw, and learns at Juilliard.

It can be quite a treat to hear a virtuoso play some classical piece on an instrument, but in my personal opinion, and with all due respect, creating original music/melody is the ultimate act of creativity, not performing someone else's work.

When I enjoy a classical piece, I listen to the melody -- the performance of the musicians makes almost no difference to me as long as the recording isn't a complete disaster in that aspect, which is very rare anyway.

I can enjoy Bach just as much, if not more, by listening to Wendy Carlos' Switched-On albums. The soul of the music is still there, talking in the same language even, just a different voice.

A lot of people if not most probably disagree with me, but there it is :)

Lastly, here is what actually got me hooked on Bach/classical in the first place. It's not played the way Bach intended it, but it's still 100% Bach, and still incredibly beautiful:

There have been thousands of young virtuosos over time. However. Only a small percentage turn out to be relevant

Too many talents, wizzards of music, i mean thousands of them including and "us" in a small place maybe bigger who cares. My question is which place will contain all individuals? I mean , do we have space ? For the purpose of "you born yesterday and you better than me, however me and you we do the same, we do music"... and the child inside me says crying :"why didn't happen this to me when i was seven? WHY?
and i answer: "because you are still six "

Just the other day I was going to post about YouTube 'prodigies'. Not only are the kids amazing but they raise all sorts of interesting issues, as evidenced in the replies. Mostly I find them awe-inspiring examples of human potential and self-realisation. If (some) children can do this.......why are so many scraping a living in the dirt? Sad.

    Here's a few I came across:

SFAIK it developed in the period around opera, where it suddenly thrilled audiences. I was thinking about this the other day, and how previously, say, monks performing plainsong would surely never of had any conception of "virtuosity" - as that would be individualistic and would detract from the form, content and function of plainsong (ritual, transcendence).

Virtuosity is a thing itself. I am generally repelled by it in music, when it is for its own sake. But even then, it is thrilling. Even better when it's cranking out great stuff though - like Voodoo Chile? :D

yes and no. Such parents surely can't be accused of neglect and each case is different, presumably - you'd need ask the kids what they thought, and then as adults too (by which time nothing can be done anyway, of course ha).

Personally I wish my folks had been more attentive and driving, not less. ;)

I have a friend who's a guitar prodigy. Nowadays he's like 40 years old, but by the age of 10 he could play the guitar so amazingly well that people would pay to watch him practice in his bedroom. This turned out to be the main income for his family for quite a while.

Anyway, don't fool yourself to think it comes easy for these people. They may very well have genetic traits which facilitates musical learning and understanding, but I assure you that they all practice like crazy, and I mean insane, really.

I bet that if you interview any of these kids, you'll find out that they practice like 6 to 12 hours a day...(How much do you practice, between facebook browsing and forum posts? lol)

This friend of mine used to practice so much that he also used to forget to eat, which later gave him a very serious case of anemia. Seriously...And he never got to finish school, because all he could think about was playing guitar. Nowadays he builds guitars for a living, and he's quite good at it, by the way, but his career as a guitar player never took of, despite being on the same technical level as the best of the best.

This level of mastery requires one to put music above anything else; family, school, friends, lovers and even health...I never really asked him, but I guess that's why he stopped pursuing his career as a musician. He's a very cool, family guy type.

Pity yourself, not them. If it wasn't for Beethoven's father, he wouldn't be Beethoven today.
