I came across this Blog, so I thought I would open up a discussion topic, as sooner or later we will all have to start weighing up the pros and cons of migrating to Windows 8.

The initial benchmarks look promising, so feel free add your comments and observations.

    Thanks for the link.

First of all: is it true that when you start Win8, the Metro interface will always appear first?
So that you first have to start the "desktop-app", to have your normal desktop on the PC?

If there is no way to directly start the desktop, that would be definitely a reason for me NOT to migrate to Win8.

Is it true that when you press the "Power On" switch of your PC, Windows must boot first before you can press the Start Menu Button ?
If there is no way to directly press the Start Menu Button, that would be definitely a reason for me NOT to install Windows.

And what exactly do you want to say with that?

That it doesn't matter if there is a new annoying thing, because there are also other things which are annoying? :snuffy:

exactly my thought - when switching to win8 - i want the gui but not this:

i want windows only to start with the desktop not with that crap in the pic above.
i hope some1 can really invent a hack for that.

well ive tested a beta in mid feb with ableton in the virtualbox - it was running pretty well in it - really fast and less cpu usage.
not sure if M$ fixed the latency problem what Win7 still has without using asio.

It will takes you exactly 1 sec to click/select the Desktop, plus <1 sec for the SSD to launch it.
And as the gain in perfs is really impressive (as stated in the article), then <2 sec isn't exactly something I can not deal with to get a better memory, CPU and disk management than with Seven.

For you it might be not a problem, for others it is.
You could also simply accept that, and not make fun of it.

It IS fucking annoying having to klick on that icon and wait (not everybody has an SSD). Why implement such crap for all machines, in the first place? If you have Win on a PC and not on a tablet, that is pure nonsense.
And it surely could be easily fixed by Microsoft, by releasing a Win8 version for PC only (or just an option "start with desktop").

exactly. and im not planning to get a SSD soon because i would need a 512GB one and these are still to expensive.
maybe i can find a solution by empty the screen before the desktop.

metro gui YES - this start screen NO!!!

Be nice to see if "Daz" comes along again, or has he already "befriended" Win 8?

Loved the leap from XP to 7 so I will watch this one for sure.

I think on the UI front, Microsoft are trying to be all things to all people. They realize that Apple and Android apps are massively popular at the moment, so they don't want to get left behind. But they are also trying to keep hold of their desktop market, and possibly hoping to convert those users over to apps at some time in the future, with a gentler learning curve.

All in all the front end seems a bit of a halfway house that was designed by the marketing department instead of engineering. In saying that, the audio section of the desktop does look promising after viewing those benchmarks.

I accept others' point of view. But it's not my fault if sometimes they make me laugh...

Not everybody have an SSD ? They should.
And no need to get a 512 GB. A 128 GB @ 100 € is more than enough for the OS and all of your programs and VST's - since samples (and files/documents) must always be located on a large internal or external HDD.

This Metro interface is designed for the vast majority of users which are... NOOBS - they want a super quick access to their music/video/mail/social network/Internet.
That's the reason why a lot of people go to the Mac, "It's sooooo simple."

Anyway, I admit that there should be an option to disable it.

windows 8 is a live rootkit.
m$ bought skypes proprietary government approved layer 2 rootkit tech, shortly after the CCC exposed it (all articles have since been adjusted per counterintel ops), and patented it.
it has been incorporated into windows 8, and every major company in the world who has invested, is plugged real time into the desktop.
if you can't watch the demo and figure this out, considering its blatantly obvious, there is something wrong with you.
think of the real time analytics, logistics, and datamining the carrierIQ rootkit provides with smartphones, yet evolved.

    I think so, too.
But I don't understand why they don't release two different OS... one for the tablets, and one for the desktop?

    The answer is probably this:

    True words *yes*

I installed it (64bits version) on a space 500go HDD in my HP DV3 i7 notebook and tested a few stuffs ...

First the reg trick to get the startmenu will not be able in the final version, programmers said they will fully remove the startmenu code to prevent this, but there are a few freeware which add custom start menu from scratch, so this is def. not a problem.

About compatibility : drivers I tested are fully compatible (Traktor 10 audio, RME Hammerfall DSP & Asio4All).
Programs like Traktor Pro 2.5, Ableton 8.x, Reason 6.x run smooth, even a bit faster than under Win7.

The main advantage is boot load time and system response in general : every run faster than Win7 and is more reactive, maybe thanks to the removed Aero graphic goodies ?

About the new full screen startup menu : yep I agree it's a bit strange on a non-tactile system, but once you've understand how it works it's not that bad.
I think the main Microsoft goal was to unite tablet and PC OS so we'll be able to run tactile metro apps designed for tablets and Windows apps on a single OS.
Pre-installed metro apps are not really impressive but it's just the start (and most built-in Microsoft apps in history were not impressive btw).

Nearly two month I use it everyday, I played a few dj set with it, and till now didnt get any crash at all.
Release preview is free, valid until january 2013 and you can use Windows update on it, so I can recommand it.
