To me, it's the question what is a producer? I'm the last guy to talk about electronic music production, but as I infer from reading "'round here", these are usually individuals composing, mixing, and in some cases mastering their tracks themselves. And that's what's called a "producer". In my eyes, they are the "artist".
Sometimes the artist is just a vocalist. Sometimes just a guitar player. Sometimes much more involved in the track from start to finish. It's a blurred line, really. In pop/rock music, I've always considered the producer to be the guy who wraps it all up and says "ok, this track is done. The guy in charge of managing everything.
But I believe I understand what you mean by producer in this case.
Yes, kind of ridiculous for teeny girls to be tweeting about plugins or whatever just because they saw it's endorsement by someone who's work they admire. But hey, they're teenage girls, right? They aren't really the target audience for this plugin, I think. It's similar to endorsement of a guitar by a band. Just because you instagram a selfie with a picture of you with the same guitar doesn't mean you're a guitar player.
But some new unlearned (noob/normal/muggle, whatever) may see that plugin, become inquisitive about what it is, learn about it, and decide they want to learn "production" and be the next Skrillex or whatever.
I don't agree with hiding what you do, unless it is a thing which makes what you and your art unique. For example @Alien and his vocoder methods. That is his unique method to achieve his sound, and he should keep that to himself if he likes. But to say I don't want to share with someone how to find the tools and things you need to look into to get started down this road I think is selfish. It's like telling someone I won't show you how to play guitar or even where the music store is.
And yeah, talking sound engineering to people (even musicians, vocalist, guitar players, etc.) is usually an exercise in futility because there is just no common ground. They don't know the difference between a 1176 and a dbx-160 or what comping is and what's involved. A guitar player was telling me "to fix timing all you have to do is line up all the amplitudes". When I asked him what tools he uses to do that, he just kind of mumbled hey, you're a sound guy, don't you know what to use. I've got like one or two guys in my town that can sit down with me and talk about sound engineering. Everyone else, I just tell I use the sound gooderizer on it. :winker:

I feel this pain... In my old band I played bass and was the only one who knew how to produce. Almost like your situation. When we would record, to them it was a party. They would show up at my home studio with bottles, bags, and beers. Dont get me wrong, I like any excuse for a party. But, recording is a little different. Moderation is key.
Nothing is worse than having your loud, drunk, high, and opinionated singer slurring over your shoulder his version of how to "line up the amplitudes" when youre tracking the guitarist. LoL
