That I can partially agree with you on, theory can only get you so far. I could read all the "Music Producing" books in the world, and that doesn't make me a good producer. Just like I could read about working out every day, and it doesn't make me fit lol. Putting what you learn to practice is what gives you results, that and repetition. I find though, that having the knowledge of a certain subject before a dive into it can help me achieve the results I want at a faster rate and gives me a deeper understanding of the subject. Not only that I find it motivates me to try things I wouldn't have tried before. I think as long as their is a good knowledge to practice ratio then I don't see a problem :)

Mine is to understand the underlying concept, but not to look at the most common application straight away. It can be learned through any medium (video, text etc). Then i try applying the base concepts in my DAW incase there are any shortcomings or pro's or cons before actually applying it in an actual real scenario. I find this way you can avoid some of the problems later down the line and you incoporate it into your own unique workflow, which imo does tie into a unique and hopefully good sound at the end. + You dont initially box yourself in to "this is how you make this specific sound". I find that when i started i used to associate certain synths with certain sounds but obviously over time and i guess some experimentation you realize that a synth/sound design of a technique/concept is much more capable then first thought.

Videos for sure. Reading I often get distracted and start thinking about other stuff. I sometimes noticeI read the whole page but I was thinking about a new epidode of Walking Dead for example :) Video tutorials are great because you see things being done.
