    Hey, everyone. I recently switched from attempting to make EDM music and moved on to something different but keep running into the same problem. Everything i make has a somber feel to it. Any Advice?

    @J Addison
    Its because of you key choice. Write something in a maj key and use 7th chords in your progression. You couldnt make that somber if you wanted to. Then you can bring it back to the minor for the breakdown/sad part to create some tension in the arrangement :wink: Just my $.02

    Switch up the intervals in your chords as well. And use augmented and diminshed triads. Everything doesn't have to be played in standard minor or major.

    I love that you said somber and not sad.

    in the piano roll a major chord will have the first note, put 3 semitones spaces between and then 2 semitones. minor just changes the middle note, but how many spaces/semitones would one need to make augmented and/or diminished chords?

    like what would be the piano roll formula for both?

  14. There is no piano roll formula. A diminished chord is built upon minor thirds (4 notes) atop each other and augmented major thirds (5 notes). Dim in C is C Eb Gb Aug in C is C E G#

    It's describing exactly what superliquidsunshine stated. Chords and the intervals that make them.
    There is no specific "piano roll" formula as it is an exact representation of the piano's keys and what works on one will work on the other.

    Not making fun of you, brother, just hoping to elucidate.
    The formula for addition is always the same whether you work it out on a piece of paper or a calculator.

  20. The link explains chord theory, not piano roll theory as there is no such a thing. Nonetheless, an educational link for someone needing to comprehend the basics of chords and how to build them..
