Neglecting the minor details, do you find this enjoyable?? Are the bass frequencies acceptably issued?? Are the high-pitched percussion elements adding a notorious extra flavor??

The Lead guitar is too strong !
I Think The level is good when you down your fader -4 db, and add more compression for this.
Also you can add more dark reverb with short tail to give the guitar a little bit in the back and glue the whole mix

I think the guitar tooling is the biggest problem in your track;)

Maybe you can cutt 120-140 Hz HP Filter.

200-400 Hz determines the readability.

4-5 Khz add some Airnes and Fresh +- 2 db High shelf

Actually I can't turn in a greater work, 'cause I don't have anything but a regular home PC and a Marshall M15 guitar amplifier. So I try to focus on getting my elements correctly distributed on the frequency map. I did apply slight compression to get my crappy guitar sound more uniform throughout the mix, evidently it wasn't enough.

Quite like the idea behind the track and that santana vibe, but I would lose the piano melody in the background A) Because you could barely hear it anyway and
B) It seems slightly out of tune/key with the guitar riff

Needs work, and vibratos at some parts sound weird while some notes are offbeat. I would say playing is sloppy at some parts, nothing another take can't fix. I suggest that you add a LONG delay-reverb to the guitar that's very noticeable (the delay is only slightly softer than the dry).

 

@prshreshtha: You're totally right. I tried to 'capture' my solo improvisation level, which is really poor right now (almost one year with no practice whatsoever). It took me like 10~12 takes to get it done and I didn't edit the recording on purpose. My objective is to upload similar stuff every once in a while and check on my progress through comparison.

I'll try your delay suggestion on another coming track.

Not bad mate. Checking progress through comparison is a great idea.

I think you are trying to achieve 2 things here. Good improv/playing and a good mix.
Concentrate on 1 or the other. A solid sounding mix is normally achieved through solid playing.
If you want a good mix, then you can expect to do many takes on all the sections to get it perfect.
Use the improv track as a guide and break it down into sections. The record each part again individually.

Ditto to delay/reverb
Add guitars panned hard left/right playing backing chords, this will add width in the song.
What DAW are you using? Give some guitar vst's and IRs a shot.

Yes, you're right a good foundation is essential (good guitarist, drummer, etc). The other hand, a lot can be achieved by the mix. I've heard worse record, which after passing through a professional sound engineer was amazing

 

@hyem77: You've given me a couple of interesting ideas for my upcoming tracks! and yes, I'm trying to learn how to mix properly and on the other hand, I want to get my fingers back in shape to solo as a boss! :dancing:
