I am Mavericks, and am thinking of updating anyway,... to Yosemite.

How do I do it?... I mean, once it;s done, what happens?.. do I have to update my plugins and daws?.. or just try and use them, and make a list of what no longer works?

I have no clue how people go about it.

Last night, on ebay, I bought a recovery USB for Mavericks, and one for Yosemite.

The biggest reason is that I want some of these new Logic versions, so I know I need to update my osx to somthing above Mav... although I realize the newest Logic update needs you to have SIerra... and I AINT goin that high!!

Before you do that, back up your current system and make sure your machine is compatible with Yosemite. Some macs are really hard to install previous OS if you update to a newer one. If you have a big hard drive, make a new partition just to test it first and see if your daw/s and plugins work.
If you are going to do it, might as well go ahead with Sierra. I did partition my main drive for a test and I am very happy that I did. Everything works for me. I've been working on it for the past 5 days. Just disable SIP and you are good to go. Recommended if your main DAW is Logic X.

    good luck

Can you tell me about the benefits of Sierra compared to Mavericks? Any downsides?

Most current software will work great, however there are a few points you should be aware of before upgrading:
    • Some older software may not work. If you have a few goodies you definitely do not want to miss, but the developer does not maintain the software anymore, you might be stuck. This can be both handy system tweaks or music apps or VST(i)
    • Same for drivers: While I was able to run a few older but great USB Audio/Midi interfaces under Mavericks, they just won't work in ElCapitan anymore. Manufacturers' drivers have an expiration date, so to say, unless you're ready to stick to a certain OS version.
    • You can set up Sierra as a virtual machine using VMware fusion, for example. This can run on Mavericks too. If you really want to be sure everything works well, you can take your time and try everything out in the VM before actually installing the system on your Mac.
I have seen various upgrades on friends' machines, and it seems that starting from ElCap on, the performance of the system is generally better, including improvements of the flawed memory management in Mavericks. The guys I know are happy with ElCap.
Interestingly, many software benchmarks show otherwise...

i haven't had any problems with sierra at all, actually it reminds me of mavericks (as in more stable than el cap and yosemite) . but if you don't need to update then i wouldn't bother.
i think OP should update because he said he wanted the newest version of logic x, which needs sierra. therefore i see no reason for him not to update :)

I've had no problems with El Capitan in the last few months and am getting ready to upgrade to Sierra. I already did a test upgrade to Sierra in September and everything seemed like it was working fine, except for Quicken (you'll have to have Quicken 2017) and Tech Tools Pro 8 (you'll have to upgrade to 9). I did a TM downgrade back to El Cap at that time because of Tech Tools Pro, which wasn't quite ready for Sierra yet, and I wasn't sure I wanted to keep going without having that in place. Now, everything's all caught up, so as soon as I get my two new internal hard drives up and running, I'm going for it. I'm using DP 9.12, PT 12.7 and DSP-Quattro 4.4, can't speak for anything else. Due to how weird Sierra was about Tech Tools Pro 8, which hasn't had any problems from Lion up to El Cap, I'm assuming there's some new plumbing in Sierra that may or may not cause issues, so you'll want to do a full TM backup before the upgrade. I'm sure, like El Cap, it'll be fairly stable by late Spring, so you'll have a full six months or so of decent use before whatever the next OS is.
