What's wrong with these songs and why do or don't you like them?

    or other tops.

1- Please express your real internal feelings about their genres, melodies and production.

2- Are you a melody guy? I mean is melody your first priority for rating songs? There are lots of genres that melody in them is not important at all.

3- What do you expect from the music that these ones do or don't satisfy that?

I personally hate all of them and any song that would be similar to them and this is dear @jayxflash 's view.

    1. Great productions, melodies, performances, arrangement, mixing, mastering, etc
    2. Yes, I am. Melody is key. But so is simplicity, repetition, familiarity, patterns, etc. Everything that rewards the listener to make them feel connected to the music and almost make them feel like they are a musician too.
    3. Melody, hooks, vibe, feeling, emotion, groove, energy, message, dynamics...

Edit: I am pretty damn wide when it comes to genres. I like alot of music. There is good stuff to gather from them all (there is good shit, and bad shit - in all genres).
I'm currently studying songwriting at university and my goal is to work as a songwriter.

1 - Why are you asking me to waste my time by listening to bullshit so that I can verify that it's bullshit?

2 - Please, more melody (as opposed to hooks) in popular music. And throw in more harmony, along with it. And maybe some real lyrics.

3 - I won't waste time listening to bullshit so that can complain that it had been a waste of time.

It's pop music, I don't know what kind of analysis you're trying to do (apart from the fact that it has already been done to death)

    1) They're all songs meant to be listened on the radio, while on the car, or while your wife or your mother is doing house chores. I don't hate it but I would never buy them (or even download them lol), because they come and go quicker than me in bed. Also, I read all the first 30-40 titles and don't even know one. (I'm listening and these are pretty awful tbh)
    2) This doesn't make any sense, melody is just a part of the song. Yes, it's one of the most important parts, but it's enhanced by the elements around it as well
    3) What does this even mean

You've probably heard of ABBA then? And the Swedish songwriting mafia who followed :) You can't go wrong if you follow their blueprint, and then add some twists of your own. ABBA themselves conducted a huge amount of research regarding what makes a good pop song, and they spent 5 years, 8 hours a day in the studio perfecting it. They certainly did't appear suddenly out of nowhere, they had a long apprenticeship that included lots of trial and error.

wow. if those are the top 100, i've totally lost touch with popular music. i only recognize about 20% of those artists, and not a single one of the songs.

    I won't say good/bad or like/don't like, but I will say:
Unoriginal, each song could be interchanged with scores of other groups/'artists' of whichever particular style. Nothing new, fresh. different, or daring. Hell, some could be interchanged within the first 10 on the list.

There are lots of interviews on the internet, and probably some books too. Benny and Björn wrote their first song together in 1966, and they worked very hard to perfect their technique.

You will also find the ABBA influence referenced in this article

As a swede myself, yes! :) They set the bar for many others to follow. They also enfused the importance of the state funded music school (that all children, myself included, started the music journey in from age 7..although I started at my dads drumkit when I was 4).
Starting from an early age, giving everyone (rich and poor) a chance to play and enjoy music - it's no wonder we are 3rd biggest exporter of music in the world (following the US and the UK).
We also have generously state funded associations providing bands/artists with rehearsal spaces, instruments, PA, etc. Refused, The Cardigans, The Hives, Max Martin, In Flames, Entombed, Swedish House Mafia, etc have much to thank for this.

I remember Benny saying something like "writing a hit song is like waiting for the dragon outside the cave. If you go away for a while you will miss it.". Or something like that. They knew what they did, musically.

I don't know of any other way to do it except by listening. Any other way is judging something else, not the recording itself.

There (logically) might be some gems in there, but I doubt it, and I'm certainly not going to listen to them all to find out. :D Just like I don't watch films, because 99.99999% of them are complete rubbish and the effort to find something worth watching is too great compared to the pay-off.

I stopped knowing the "charts" during the late80s, early 90s. And then I even stopped knowing the names of bands - who cares who did a great trancey track when it's called X9101 Scooby Mix whatever. Plus, I was probably so fucked I couldn't even remember.

Is pop music shit now, or am I just older? I mean, books don't have remotely the impact on me that they did when I was young. I never liked modern authors anyway, so why should old authors' work (that hasn't changed) have less impact now, if not because I am older and harder to effect and impress?

I suspect the young people listening to today's music find it as "now" and exciting as I did, back in the day. That's certainly my experience. OTOH, like everything else, it all seems so slick, self-conscious and vacuous that I hate it.

There's surely nothing so awful in the present top 100 as these old-timers from The Golden Age? haha

The Green duck got to number 4 in UK.

St Winifreds Choir was Christmas Number One and sold over a million in UK.

Agadoo reached Number Two in UK and spent 75 weeks in the Charts. [George Michael's Careless Whisper kept it off topspot.]

The Birdie Song reached Number Two in UK.

Star Trekkin' spent two weeks at Number One in UK.

Bowie's Laughing Gnome made it to Number 6 on re-release in the 70s.

So, yes, all very big hits. From the time when singles sold a lot of units. haha

One I forgot was Joe Dolce's "Shaddap ya Face". This spent 8 weeks at Number in Australia and 3 weeks at Number One in UK --- famously keeping Ultravox's classic Vienna off top-spot. lol

    It's a catchy, huh!

They don't make them like this anymore? :D

Can't you just enjoy the music you like depending on your mood ? Not every song needs to discuss our mortality and the meaning of life. There's many great songs on that top 100 and the first one has referenced a very known little melody riff. You just have to listen.
