Arguing over what computer is better is about as dickless as it gets. You might as be arguing over who makes the best hammer or the best nails. It reminds me of the fat guys at the gym playing basketball, all over them in 300 dollar shoes, none of them able to run 1/2 the court without having a heat attack.....

Nobody that will hear your music will care if you made it on a Mac or PC, or what you recorded it with...

 

The option of cracks and being able to buy will always be more valuable than just buying..

 

I've been using Macs since the early Nineties, too -- believe me when I say I'm the last person who wanted to see the company go in the direction it has. But even you have to admit that they've gone where the money is, and the money, apparently, is towards customers who want a top-of-the-line smart phone, not a dependable, professional computer for music, graphics and video that's worth a multi-year investment. People are abandoning the platform in droves.

 

yeah, I was an apple tech for 4 years. I can safely say I can. Unlike that cheap ass dell shit. and I'm a Texan so I can say that. lol

 

Graphics and video? Are you kidding me? I don't know anybody in graphics art NOT using a Mac.
But you are right The sky is falling, the sky is falling.
I really don't care though, since I use both. Windows 10 runs great on my 4ghz iMac.

 

..are we really having an os discussion out of this? I appreciate everyones current views on "other" peoples choice of os... but hasn't this gotten worn out pretty hard over the years? and who cares what another man/woman uses as their platform?

I certainly am not happy with the yearly almost forced updates by OSX at all, but I have been using macs for over 26 years or so, and they are working just fine for me thanks, but I certainly wouldn't begrudge a man for using a windows machine.... to each his own.

my OSX machines are going on 8 years old, and with SSD/ram upgrades etc... purring just fine, and i'm honestly astonished I haven't thought about buying a new machine... but if someone else is using a dell, I'm not gonna tell them what to do with their life or their music or how they like their steak.

 

I started buying plugins as well after I found what's working for me. And some of them I cant use any more because i forgot to deactivate them in ilok license manager before i did a clean install of osx.

And i don't have any clue whatsoever how in the world to contact anybody from i fucking lok dot com to get those activations reset, to be able to use them again. And it's a fucking shame that you actually cant get any support there if you don't pay extra ir don't have an ilok.

So therefore i fully support the scene in what they do.

As far as releases go, it's justlike with music. In the beginning everything new is exciting and yiu wanna test it. In the next phase you develop your taste and preferences. Next, you sharpen your senses and learn the tools. And the more you develop your skills tge mire you realise what's essentially important and just what's gimmicky. Especially in mixing. In production everything goes (everything except studiokinkedvst garbage) as far as sound is concerned. But in mixing you just need a handful of really good tools you can work with.

So in the end you are getting less and less excited about stuff. Last time I got excited about a plugin when it came out was izotope Neutron. But I found out it was useless for ne because it needed too many resources in mixing situations and also I got getter results creating my own chains. Neutron just sounded like it overhyped everything.

So I don't think the mac scene is dead it's just that nothing impressive is coming out at the moment. But that PSP 1176 is pretty dope I've gotta admit.

what's the selling point of an OSX workstation ? price ? performance ? a mouse with just one button ? a keyboard with no function keys ?
you can have both on windows and for a fraction of the price.
lets face it, apple turned totally gay.

software is king, hardware is dime a dozen.

The reason PCs always had virus issues is because Bill Gates bent over for the FBI/NSA right away when they asked for access in the 90s and left a big hole in the OS for them.

Apple didn't do it until recently and that is why things are going downhill in that area. For decades we have been safe from malware. Thanks Tim Cook.

The other reason that MACs were easier for pros to deal with is that there is very little variation across each years products. For example all Mac Pros built in 2011 had basically the same parts and the hardware conflicts are kept to a minimum. This meant that hardware guys like digidesign or UAD only had to worry about a small set of variables where on the PC it was a swirling storm of conflict.

In the PC world there are literally 1000s of different combinations of components that can work together and that makes things more difficult for software compatibility and upgrade/development.

(It is funny that Altiverb is still named after the MAC altivec processor even though no one uses them anymore.)

One of the main reasons I think it is a hot issue is that I have 30 years of experience in Mac philosophy and trouble shooting, not to mention my software investment. Switching to a PC is not a small matter. I would be leaving behind a lot of knowledge and experience. This is not something I would do voluntarily unless there was literally no other option. Everytime I work on a PC I get very agitated and annoyed at the differences in the philosophy and methodology. Although in most regards they are basically the same thing.


I will say this. Much like in our government where the voters have no measurable influence on the policies and outcome of government activity (health insurance, climate change, wars) . It is pretty obvious that the big technology companies no longer care to listen to what consumers want, they are in the business of creating what is best for the future world they totally control. We will all just pay our monthly subscriptions to rent whatever we want to stream or compute on and shut up, while they track us and record us and sell our data to other giant companies that will do more of the same. We will get all excited to purchase the latest impotent little gadget that will spy on us and transmit our movements to our employers and debt holders. Forget about selling us tools for creating and doing the serious work of unraveling the mysteries of the universe. Instead we are getting a pre-obsolete electronic dog collar for our overlords to count their cattle with.
