Probably using ribbon mics, the engineers did amazing mono recordings with incredible placement. These three guys, Eddie Fischer, Andy Williams and Bobby Darren didn't need auto tune and each knew how to play with the camera and audience, Maybe not most's favorite kind of music, but the absolute professionalism of everyone involved in these productions were all top notch and just shine on through. Even after all the years and all the copying, all the transfers from medium to medium, if this sounds as good as it does now, just imagine the first and second generations!

If it's live where are the ribbon mics? Just off camera?

 

Operated by a soundman with a boom just out of camera range, yes. The orchestra was usually captured with one microphone from the conductor's perspective.

Yea, his show was great. The man smoked cigarettes every second of the show and my father said he drank a lot. It looked as if it came so easy for him, in his delivery was the essence of cool.
