@superliquidsunshine I think the idea is to use something so heavy the sheer weight of it will kill vibrations/resonance. I've seen stands you fill with sand, same principle. If I had to guess I'd say the wood is there to adjust the height properly.

  2. @fraifikmushi .. I kind of know what you're saying. Sand is very dense and won't let sound through and makes great ballast for stands for that very reason. If you create a subfloor and fill it with 5 or 6 inches of sand and then wood on top of that, your downstairs neighbor wouldn't hear the Bolshoi Ballet rehearsing above their heads. Concrete on the other hand transfers sound really well. Our apartment has concrete block walls with plaster board facing and sound passes super well through it as well as the floors. My wife and daughter easily hear me singing away when I am in the laundry room below them, and when the dryer is running the low frequency throbs through like there is no separation at all. Books would work better than the wood to deaden the transfer between the monitors and the blocks. I actually use old encyclopedias under my monitors. I have a thing for using found objects differently than their intended purposes.

Yea, as fraifikmushi said, the whole idea behind cinder blocks is that they don't resonate because of the weight/mass. The wood is there just to "flatten" the top of the blocks for monitor to sit on (and protection from scratching ...it was a fast fix at the moment) because, as you can see on the picture, the top of the block is not flat, it got two narrow bumps for stacking (other side of the block has dips of the same dimension). But, as you rightfully pointed out about the wood resonance, that is my only concern, I'm afraid that it messes with the sound. But I didn't have time to think about it and find another solution so I left it like this for now.

I am not sure that sand would work better than concrete. I haven't done any testing, but people over the internet are praising cinder blocks for this. The thing with the sand is that, it has to be in some kind of container, wood or metal tube, and those containers transfer sound better than concrete. But good point on books instead of wood...although I have brand new, never used, Auralex pads I could start using... I planed to do some testing to see if it works better with pads, just didn't find time.

  5. I guess you are good to go with the concrete blocks as stands. They don't isolate well as used for walls though, and that's why I questioned them. Some kind of foam on the wood should help. A layer of sand in a subfloor effectively eliminates sound transfer to the space underneath it. Moby as well as many others have done this in their studios to isolate for the benefit of their downstairs neighbor, or in the case of one fellow with a wife with a dance studio directly above his head, in the ceiling.

The older squared versions of the krks sound much better than the new rounded ones. I bought a pair of the v8s with a busted tweeter in my right speaker. Been searching everywhere for a pair of them in good condition or at least one of them.

Switched my setup around and upgraded a few things since my post on page 2...I'm done buying gear. I've accomplished my dream. For someone who somewhat grew up without much, I'm grateful and blessed.

And yes, we are currently working on a room acoustics even though there wont be much work needed.

Bass traps are already installed (Can be visible on the photos but its blended with walls) and KRK's are now on stands.

Table is on the shorter side of the room, because there was no space on other walls for my equipment
because I plan to extend this table in the future.

Panels will go on the ceiling and right wall next to the table.
Skyline diffuser will go where the Batman picture is.

There is also SE Electronics Reflexion Filter behind the microphone.

New additions in the studio (Not on photos) are Moog Mother 32 and Access Virus TI.

    Regards,
    Boris

Your room looks basically like one big resonator with standing waves all over the place.
It would be a good idea to move your monitors away from the wall and position yourself in the sweet spot. That is step one, long before any work on acoustics.

  14. @fraifikmushi .. That was the first thing that I noticed. The short wall is OK and it is nice that the room is not symmetrical. Good luck in your new room, @Bokula.

I know about equilateral triangle, and speakers are set up that way. Back of the monitor are hiting through curtain and into the window which absorbs a lot. You can see it on the pictures. And monitors are facing me while im always leaning back from the table to make equilateral triangle. It works perfect, but it wasn't clear from the first picture Ive shared.

I work on a Dell E series laptop, Koss PortaPro headphones and Samson Graphite 49 keyboard controller. Google these for pictures and add a random man sitting at a desk. ;-)
