Is when you have nothing but you are still confident because you are the boss of yourself and know that the meaning of life is to be happy just walking the dirty NY streets, just living day by day and enjoying the ride.

    It's called being 25, isn't it? ;)

Just checked, Travolta was 23 in SNF.

Coincidentally I went to NY when I was 23 too, and I spent days just walking around and visiting bars, staying up all night, feeling beautiful, feeling that the whole world was beautiful. I adored walking and drinking in NY, but I went nowhere, no art galleries, nothing. Just loving being alive, meeting strangers and just getting on. I remember the big music store and bought some Sly Stone sheetmusic. And by the woody tourist boats place there was this huge black guy, a street vendor telling people I was David Bowie.

To be young, and to feel beautiful, in a beautiful world.......it's the best. Age has its compensations (a 747 Jumbo jet in Travolta's case, a sense of calm in mine) but it's never going to feel like *that* again. OTOH, nostalgia, ugh!

Stayin' Alive has a fantastic arrangement. The way the instruments blend to get the groove is brilliant. And who doesn't love it?

    Great story. :)
Though he was 29 here, its the ending scene from the sequel Staying Alive (1983).I like it as well, although it has a very low rating on IMDB, the movie was very successful, soundtrack is also superb.

Mr. J. Travolta was in 1983 deeply involved in Scientology - still is!

So The meaning of life can be interpreted in many ways!

Btw: Mr. J. Travolta is a great acture - no doubt!

scientology is actually great psychotherapy, which then is used to make a shitton of money from every person involved...
There are groups which are like reformists from scientology and only use their core techniques without the additional crap

In any case, i have no answer to the meaning of life. As it may be infinite, there is only gratefulness to be a part of it lucky enough not to be involved in war or have a heart full of hatred..

    Nonetheless, some music

29, and Stayin' Alive? Ah. If one hasn't felt it by then, one perhaps never will. It's sad to think some people maybe never feel it. I was talking with my young (20s) Canadian sister the other day about this, about being in New York, and ...... feeling something like Travolta in this movie scene. Which is why I responded. Like most, she took my self-description of "being beautiful" as conceit, but.......I don't believe it was that at all. She struggles with feeling worthy, attractive, being "good", whatever. Many people do....I did. At university my housemates nicknamed me "ugly", which really upset me, and it took me a decade to understand it was actually a compliment. This sort of shit so fills the head of youngsters, it's horrible. Young people especially feel they have to meet some external measure to be worthwhile - yet we should be always telling them that they are worthwhile by definition, that they are beautiful, that they can create themselves, that they can *be* - that it comes from within simply by dint of being. Things like this Travolta walk exemplify it - though I wouldn't walk quite like *that* lol.

It isn't a conceit to realise one's self is amongst the greatest creation of the cosmos. [It sounds conceited, but it's simply a fact]. Others are greater (and more beautiful) but not much. Yet those small differences between us are magnified to the extent that they massively distort our subjective reality and eat away at our true selves. Without a proper sense of ourselves it's little wonder our world is such a mess, imo. When you recognise your own beauty you should be less inclined to sully it, imo. We always tell ourselves we are ugly.......(and we are that too). But why not be beautiful?

[I don't care for movies or song videos tbh, they distort my own vision of things. Music takes me to a place way beyond what any video ever suggests. Movies move me in a way I feel uncomfortable: they make me feel that I am being manipulated. Do I need Lassie to tell me kittens getting burned to death isn't fun? ]

    Blah blah woof woof :D

Even if I love your post since it remembers me that same exact feeling I had when I was walking at Champs Elysées by night in 78, I don't agree with that quote.
There is nothing huge enough to compensate our physical decline that will inevitably leads to ugliness and impotence. And the cruel slow fall is even more painful for spectacular rivals to Adonis like we were... :winker:

    First of all, thank you.

I was going to mention Paris too, in the late 80s. A lover paid for us both to go for my 20th birthday in August and it was simply *the most*. I fell in love with Paris, with the veneration of Art, with the creation of the self. It was so beautiful and so moving it changed my internal life, entirely. I wanted to live there, so, so badly. It lifted me in ways I had never experienced in Britain at all. I wanted to write, paint, make music and make love. Mostly , again, I just got pissed.......notice a theme here? haha

So when 911 happened, and Paris in the 90s and more recently too, it hurt me in ways difficult to describe. I felt assaulted, even though I loathe so much about The French and American State. The love and sunshine I had felt, and some vague but powerful transcendent quality too, was defiled and totally negated. It still upsets me now.

Anyway, previously I may well have agreed with you about there being nothing to compensate for that flower of youth. But.....for me at least.....age does have very significant compensation. My emotions are less volatile, I am less impulsive, I have a greater perspective, more patience, more tolerance, a greater imperviousness to unwarranted criticism. It's quite a profound relative calmness for me.

Whilst I miss the intensity of youth I feel I have greater depth and more consideration - and a calmness I never could achieve as a youth. Experience can't be bought except at the loss of innocence and I find it a reasonable trade off. There certainly is a trade-off - and in a way I never could imagine as a youth. Plus, there's nothing to do about it except find some compensation. :D

The meaning & reason of life is really down to breeding. If someone hadn't 10.000 years ago f***d somebody we wouldn't be here writing about these very things. All the other things in life are just incidents happening in a +/- 75 year window on this planet.
    Peace

    We could plant a house.
    We could build a tree.
    I don't even care.
    We could have all three.

The meaningless of life is to fnck confusedly.
The meaning of life is to love understandingly.

The Picture of Dorian Gray ?
Anyway, life's a bitch: we should be born old and die young (like Benjamin Button); there is no "meaning of life", it happens by accident, and happiness is just an occasional absence of the daily misery.
Calmness and patience are undoubtedly some natural compensations for the poor old, allowing them to apprehend death with serenity...
