I used to make scores in Cubase, but left for Ableton to focus on electronic stuff years ago. Now I want to go back to scoring and wondering if Studio One is a genuine Cubase competitor?

Anybody got any experience using it for this kind of stuff?

As you already know, "notation" in S1 is obtain in conjunction with notion 6, so not totally integrated into S1 which up to now and even with this tight integration is a bummer for me. Having to deal with and buy 2 programs!!. I'm hoping for the day when the two program come into one program that is studio One 4 hopefully, with notation like Cubase or Logic Pro or Digital Performer with which I have worked already. I love studio one but until it is a full DAW I'm not going to buy it. With integrated notation I think it would be an unbeatable DAW because it's that good and could become the new standard DAW in studios taking the thrône of Pro Tools.

It's one of the best DAWs for that sort of thing I have ever tried, in my honest opinion. Especially if you are using many many soft synths or many many instances of Kontakt. You can print to audio offline the instrument completely and then if you want to go back to tweak some parameters or restructure the midi entirely, it's just a right click and a left click away. It's definitely not optimized for point and click EDM production the way FL Studio is or perhaps even perhaps Ableton is but for what you want to do it should be perfect for that sort of thing =)

To be fair I definitely don't know the first thing about musical notation so if that's something you need then I can't speak on that. That being said a couple of my friends that are very longtime, dissatisfied Pro Tools users have taken a great liking to S1 ;)

I always have trouble with playing a video in it. I guess my graphic card is too old. (Radeon 4650) So I didn't investigate its reason much. I make the music on S1, export the wave files and then use a video program for synchronisation.

Shortly, I say it's not good for scoring, but it's very good at mixing.

Useful to know. I have a fairly new-ish Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX970 card so it should be more than fine for video rendering.

Why do you say it's no good for scoring? I cannot read music, so I do not intend to use notation, but mean scoring more in the essence of making score-style music on it.

Sometimes it's important to synchronize impact sounds, to define when to go higher or lower velocity for strings, etc. Timing is important, hence I said no good for scoring. If there's no problem while playing the video file, it's fine then.
