First Linux Mint is Ubuntu on steroids to me. It is and out of the box and works. Coedx and everything is installed on install really cool. also they customize it to make it easier and better. Yes Unix is the industry standard for high end systems, but it was very expensive to keep running.

As far as bash for non geeks all the front end programs attach to bash on the back end. for example GRsync is just a front end for Rsync.
Now for his use of bash I guess he can grow into learning to use it. It's like CMD on windows it's there but how many times do you really use it. IT guys use it all the time.

hope its not a joke and wonder why the insight took ms so long - switching from win to osx ten years ago including the nix commandline promt was such an relief compared to the crappy ms bash. As I started to use the osx's commandline on daily basis I really miss something when booting into my gaming rig running windows. Now things will hopefully change - good news. will definitely make working with windows way more comfortable for many.

ms bash is incorrect. MS is CMD bash is unix / linux. and also OSX since that is Free BSD. Now the newer version of windows have power shell which is to try and get the real Unix guys to move to windows.. Al thought I really drought any real Unix guys would, since they all consider Windows a joke.

Every time I see this thread come up on the other side, I for a split second think that someone posted Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill. lol

Typical fucking windows developers. The compile a C program, where main doesn't take variables, and it doesn't return. Dumbasses.

Well, someone mentioned Docker; they're not talking a lot about what happens under the hood, but it seems it's some docker port. I heard a while ago, Canonical, Redhat aaaaaand Microsoft are working on some united packaging format (relying on Docker) to "ship" applications.

Someone mentioned having GNU/Linux toolchain is bullshit... Well, linux didn't really make it to the desktop (except for android). Being a system administrator, since good virt solutions, well supported curr-gen processor (i5 and 7) and Docker... I don't see many Linux desktops, and most of the time, we actually prefer having some VMs, shellbox, or Docker containers, spawned from windows or macos desk, for the features it allows (having a accelerated graphic support, snapshots, hardware support, ...).

No. The news is - the Kernel Team of Microsoft is developing a compatibility layer on Windows by translating what the Linux application wants to do with Linux into Windows specific stuff. It's like... on Linux you type "ls" to show your files, on Windows it's "cmd". It's not quite like that easy translation, because they try to essentially catch all these Linux specific things and translate them to Windows. But it's by no means reversible - to have that thing backwards, someone developing Linux stuff would have to catch Windows stuff and translate it to Linux. This is more or less what Wine does, if they didn't it would be even slower and worse.

No, it's not. It's way more powerful:
    - you can install stuff from the official Ubuntu repositories
    - you can install Xming or VcXsrv and get X11 support:

    - you can pipe Linux apps to Windows, which is the best thing ever - combine Windows and Linux in one command:

So, yeah. Pretty excited for what's next to come, recently they added that interoperability and 24-bit color support instead of just 16 colors, this thing is still very much beta - if you wanna check it out, make sure you're using Windows Insider in Fast Ring to get the latest beta builds :)

Edit: you don't have to run everything Linux in a big ugly window, here's how I do it:

For the why, I herd that: M$ was gonna have android compat (remember the announcement with iOS compat too?), but then due to legal issues it nver really fully developed, so this is what they can (legally) ship - a Linux Subsystem for Windows.

i really like hardcore computing "techniques", having a mbp to run windows 7 is funny/sad as shit, i love osx but can`t deal with the update agenda while maintaining a large collection of software, my point is, it`s really handy that we can do all that shit no matter where we are (o.s. point of view), but why not run it directly?

this linux config ting isn`t like that anymore, it`s easy to none now, once you pick your distro and get used to it`s commands, like Debian (wich is just maintained by people like you and me, THE COMMUNITY, here we have no company behind, just us people, and it will be like this forever, cause it`s like a social contract, it`s written), and it comes with apt-get, dpkg.... , so another debian based distro will have those same commands and it will be familiar to you if you used them before. not talking the gnu layer, distro specifically tools.

So if you`re familiar to ubuntu you also to Debian, ubuntu is debian based, it`s just a company that bundles some apps together, some interface polish and then you have "another" distro. nonetheless, Debian. (and its native apps like dpkg anyway....)

here just for the fun of using a tool i used a lot 15 years ago... no trouble to install it. it`s even JACKed.
It's avlinux 32, i like that version cause it comes all setup, with jack and shit but ALSO with a modified version of Ardour wich takes WINDOWS VST plugins. Yes. It's cool, not that it gonna take over, but it's lit. the 64 version doesn't have it, fyi.

Yes, but it's still troublesome and weird. If you need Linux stuff just use Win10 and install the subsystem for Linux things you want to do

No? It's not a Wine layer because Wine is a completely opposite thing, made by completely different people, and without enough resources to make it happen. Microsoft has an advantage of being able to change Windows to make it easier to provide a Linux compatibility layer, while Wine guys just have to follow what Microsoft does (and try to make it compatible with as much as possible - win95, winxp, win7 stuff. Much harder to do than make Linux work, because it didn't change fundamentally since like, ages.

chill Qrchack i was being sarcastic as "what to use it under windows - thunar and mousepad!?"

i never saw linux as a threat to windoze legacy as shit's here since we had 386s, linux is more like a alternative and it's good to have it around, when those allow you to try that (run other os applications natively) it's a win win situation. (in both words, windoze nix)

i also value that the community does more what compared to wich is available to them, also shout to ms to allow that too, they could even do it better, but fuck knows why not... as they're sitting in money, but once again not my money, so i can just imagine.

you said install it on windoze 10, so if other version users wanted to jump in, they couldn't so. some refuse to use win10 even offline, so it's like we're all sheeps doomed to do what they want (updating wise - much like osx).

    someone also mentioned cygwin..
