The record was found still spinning on Ian Curtis' (of Joy Division) turntable when his hanging body was discovered.

No it doesn't. He was deffinitely not a crack addict, he was a heavy, heavy alcoholic and almost lifelong heroin addict. He died quite differently, he had the shit kicked out of him. He was a manic depressive, that and the latter made his life, relationships with friends, people and his carreer difficult and ultimately resulted in a tragic ending. Never the less he managed to be one of the most inspiring and probably one of the finest bass players on the planet with only 35 summers to his name.
He was a close friend of mine ...

Jaco Pastorious was the consummate professional musician who could have played on anybody's team. He used to carry his bass guitar onto flights sans case, so that he could practise during the journey! And many, many musicians were "messed up" from the late 60's until the 80's, as that was a time of great excess in the music world, but it should also be noted that a lot of brilliant music was made during that 20-year period!

This boy turns 7 soon. When watching the video, you probably want to make jokes about it. The guitar isn't tuned correctly, his singing is mostly in tune but not always, his playing sometimes comes to unwanted pauses because of difficulties with the next guitar chord.

What I experience, however, is a boy that, simply because of his addiction to the guitar, at the age of 6 already knows more guitar techniques than I know today. He's already learned the concepts of strumming, picking, bending, creating overtones (back then that was difficult for me, because I had no teacher and pressed the string too much, took me a few months until I really understood the concept), sliding, etc.

This boy will probably never have success in the meaning of getting rich and famous, but he will be a very good musician and very likely producer, too.

  9. "Nothing else matters" except the obvious love for his playing. He is joyful and having fun. In my eyes he is amazing and given a few years I think he is going to be a great musician. Once he learns a little vocal technique those head notes are going to be spot on and will soar where the falcons fly up amongst the clouds. The feeling conveyed in his playing and singing touch me. For a six year old punk this is complicated stuff, and his eye/hand coordination and his sweet lower register singing on top of that is revealing to me of a wonderful future.

Playing with sound is pretty much affordable to everybody, which is awesome, whatever the involvement might be, even for people who just fiddle with sliders and buttons and use Audacity. Someday you have to start somewhere. To start something can be pretty embarrassing.

The second effect I see it's the more people are capable to get some stuff done the mainstream dominant view of the world might fade away, at least a little a bit...Who wants to have all those guys overpaid around to teach us what is like to be a celeb . I believe that with time and effort everybody can find something intense and deep to be experienced through some creative mean.

Ya know Zen. I've been giving this a fair bit of thought. You know what the answer is?

How can anyone possibly know what they need to know with regards to ANYTHING, unless they have had their eyes opened to the vastness of what they don't yet know!

The problem is some people don't want to have their eyes opened, they want to get everything with minimal effort and are not even prepared to enter into a discussion about what it is they don't know, or why they should know it.

Like I said, the people on this forum are great and they are generally not like that at all. They have an incredible thirst for knowledge and actually view the process of identifying ones shortcomings as an essential part of making progress, and they are also very open to an exchange of views and the sharing of ideas.

No of course. It's a given that neither of us were talking about anyone from this site with regards to music, but indulge me for a sec. Take out the fame and wealth factor (I'm inclined to call it a syndrome) from the equation, and you are left with the regular guy in the street (or girl)
Assume then for a minute one of them suffer and recover from a serious medical condition. The doctor tells them on discharge from Hospital what they can and cannot do and eat. Most people would want to read up as much information about their infliction (If they are smart as opposed to the ignorant) BUT (and here is my point) unless they have had their eyes opened to the NEED to have to learn about it, would they?

That's it. People get told everyday: "Everything is possible. You just need a PC." But that's just marketing, leaving out things like talent, the will to learn, the truth that there is no instant progress, etc.

It reminds me a lot of acting. There are acting schools for a good reason. Yet, every damn 15 min fame starlet is starring in a movie. And pretty much every music act will have an appearance in a film as well. That's not new (Cher, David Bowie, Madonna, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, to name a few), but nobody seems to tell them that they are just in there to attract their fans, not because of acting skills (if you don't believe me just look at Madonna^^).

Where does the no need to learn stuff come from? I certainly wasn't brought up that way, although I did go to a school that encouraged everybody to do well at sport, art, drama as well as academically. But I do think it's entirely possible that many people will have all of their curiosity beaten out of them by the time they leave school. Some even say that a person's creativity decreases year on year during this period of "education". And now with the new Common Core syllabus, thing's are only going to get a lot worse!

I agree, except for David Bowie, who did a more than passable job as an actor (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence). He went to art school, studied mime, and wrote all his own music, so I think he was way more creative and talented than those others who you mentioned :)

Actually, I believe the answer is Forty Six & 2.

    Nikola Tesla - The Prestige.
