It's also a legal thing. You cannot exceed certain levels and as a club owner you're the one liable for what damage your pa does to people.
@solo83 may I suggest a sound check in advance? What you describe could also be attributed to the room.

Depending on the mixing software a limiter might be on by default.

But you know... if the DJ doesn't care... The rappers doesn't care... No serious sound eng' related to the band caring about it... Who cares ?
OK OK, it's your instrumental, but you don't seem to have a scenic word about it.

Try to fiddle around user preference the Serato/... whatever the DJ is using. So you might get a cleaner stage sound, if there's no actual care around it, it'll eventually get FUCKED UP further in the process. (AND if you care about this , why didn't you solve that in... you know... rehearsals ?)

As a bass guitar and keyboard player and backing singer, my job is to provide good sources : and yeah i will give good sound; a pristine NordStage preset and some good string, and a good amp. I have a say in what my bass should sound like on the record, but many gigs are tight on the money side. But I have no time or nerve for what's goin' on in the PA (even though i'm very interested).
The truth is, a show, with 5-6 guys on stage is roughly 2000-3000$ (depending on how far and stuffs) : it means also, the backline we agreed on (possibly ours), our guy on the console, ... We can do a show for a fraction of the price. And you might get very lucky and get a pretty good sounding show for a fraction of the price. But it's due to luck.

Same shits apply to electronica and hip hop. On tinier scale.

    Point is :
    - no rehearsal : no good sound on stage
    - no actual sound check : no good sound on stage
    - no sound engineer working with the band (not the venue guy) : no good sound on stage

So it's not about your mix, or software, or rappers : it's just that, no one gave a fuck about how it sounded 'till you noticed.
If you're playing at your school or birthday party, that's cool. If you're shooting for anything more serious, ya, that's kind of a big deal.

Anyway to hell with what everyone's saying, the guy can't sing, he should stick to poetry readings and leave the music business alone :bleh:

Usually DJ's push their gain in the red during the performance (but not during the balance) because of adrenaline rush, alcohol, or excitement (or whatever other reason). Make them learn how a limiter works, and show them how better it sound when you play at the right volume. The engineer will push the volume if the DJ plays to low, but he can only limit it if it's too loud. It's mostly a metter of educate the DJ (and sometime you need to be really patient...)
If it doesn't work, go on his mixer during his live perf, set the right gain and turn up the DJ booth volume so he thinks it's louder :)

Why are you making DJ mixes for the DJ? Are you butt ass ugly or something and that's why you don't do it yourself? The whole thing sounds like a sham so maybe you should take matters into your own hands instead of just give your music and "pre made mixes away"... Where's Faoki when we need him?
