That's why I hate Soundcloud, in addition to their putting "sponspored" artists' tracks at the top of my playlist.

The follwing is an e-mail exchage in regard to a Craigslist post in which I asked, "Is it either legally necessary or advisable to photograph or video-record the government-issued ID of a subject who has signed a release form for a video/film?" – which, though typical of respondents via Craigslist, I somehow muster the naïveté to expect not to occur:

HE: Most use common sense and just look at the ID, get the information, verify that is same person. If you get gestapo or want too much data, you will sound like a con artist. Common sense is a good thing. The release / permission is just permission. As long as person signs while sober / not on drugs, not under duress, and you have their correct data, what's the worry?

ME: Thanks. I was concerned with perhaps needing the ID on file, to confirm identity in case the subject might claim later that he or she had not signed the release.

HE: You do need to save the signed release that you verified their ID, yes.

ME: I know that I need a signed release.

HE: Perhaps you should get a little more mentoring before you exploit the subjects more than they are expecting. As yes, if they don't have full disclosure, their picture ID, a drop of blood, and hair and pee samples won't protect you. That is why planned shoots are careful about using Actor's Guild members in small casting extras. Seems costly, but cheaper in long run.

ME: I don't need "mentoring," just simple advice from someone who doesn't make broad assumptions.

HE: Someone asking for advice from strangers on craigslist is too lazy to go to a public library to research actual books, then go Google from what was learned in those reputable law reference books regarding at the bare minimum: copyrights, publishing, advertising and privacy. You're not in any position to say what you need or don't... until you gain knowledge for yourself to say otherwise. You gave that away the moment you drafted then posted your ad. Just stating what 'is'; nothing more. I avoided the further obvious assumptions you may have noticed.

ME: Do you feel better about yourself, now?

HE: No, I don't feel better...I actually prefer people become intelligent adults without them being offended simply for being reminded that it's their primary duty to themselves.

ME: I suppose that I'd stepped right into a troll's trap, huh? There's still time left in the day for you to find something to do. I gotta get back to work, now. End of discussion.

He talks like a lawyer.. and the sum of what he is saying.. No don't bother trying to get a copy of photo ID, it's legally
sufficient to get a signed release.. or am I missing something?

However, plenty of businesses want a copy of an ID when you sign a contract with them, apartment complexes etc...
his said "gestapo" tactics are fairly common
