Good topic to address, but they heavy gate on the spoken voice is distractive and confusing. Recording it in a less reflective environment would have made it a lot easier to listen to.

 

I gave him a like because the gated voice reminds me of a love child between Steve Irwin and Darth Vader.

 

Perhaps he should have led with the opening line. G'day mate, stick another shrimp on the barby

I think you are making things way too complicated man.
The whole process is called gain staging.
Most people know it by now.

Technically it's not gain staging as much as it's level matching. Which I hardly ever see anyone doing in their tutorials. So I don't believe it is common knowledge, in fact bar a few it's not even being taught.

 

Watched the video. If a compressor has only a 'make-up gain' button and no knob, then you shouldn't take the make-up gain section of the compressor very seriously, or just use a third-party plugin.

2nd, just raise/lower the output volume slider of the comp, and/or the saturator, to retain your desired dBFS level.

Yeah level matching. It's the swift kick in the nuts after you think you've been making everything sound better lol
