I'm gonna start off with a TL;DR for your convenience

TL; DR: Is there a plugin or instrument with a lot of pop-rock / pop-punk presets? Maybe even one that has a bunch of different bands as presets (that's be so sweet). I can then tweak. If it's all digital stuff (versus libraries) that's great for my needs.

[Note: This is a hobby for me. Making music relaxes and distracts me from life. It goes as far as me and a few friends] Now read.

    Hey guys --

This would be amazingly helpful for me. Let me thank you so much in advance. Maybe I have your kidney? (jk)

I like pop punk. A lot. I mean, most of it.

Anyway, Motion City Soundtrack has some really fabulous stuff. They also put their synth to great use.
This is my favorite MCS song:

I just saw this posted on another thread, so I'll use this song as an example:

    I even cued it up.

Here's the thing. This is a hobby for me. And I love it. But I just don't have the time to go through Kontakt libraries, etc. Nor do I have the knwo-how to recognize something like this.

I don't need the exact sound, just close.

Any suggestions would be great. Not that it matters, I'm on a Mac OSX 10.11.5 with Logic Pro X.

    That's definitely the Moog sound.
That's the first direction to look for.
After a little google search, that band seems to use this :
    http://www.tonetweakers.com/used/realistic_mg1.2.htm
This sound also reminds me the Rentals synth sound, that is Moog too (but another model : http://www.vintagesynth.com/moog/sourc.php ).
Try Monark, Minimonsta, Arturia Mini, Diva.......
Try those free plugs too : http://blog.wavosaur.com/best-free-vst-minimoog-emulation/
And this (free too) : http://www.memorymoon.com/memorymoon.htm

I guess you would be looking for a moog clone, you could try http://www.pluginboutique.com/product/4-Synth/151-Minimogue-VA
Non free, the best i could think would be Native Instruments Monark.
As for the sound itself, two oscillators two octaves apart and some portamento.
VCF with zero attack, sustain and release, long decay. VCA with zero attack, full sustain, no release
Add a little resonance for bite.

    Thanks a lot, man!

I ahve Monark. My problem is that I'm really bad wiht synths. Like, I sorta get it and am not an idiot so know the basics... but beyond that -- Preset city.

Open Monark, go to the presets folder >>>>>> Lead >>>>>> Formica preset (the 5th preset).
Put oscillator 2 and oscillator 3 at 0 (=noon, for that just double click on it) and it will be a very good starting point :)

For a more close Motion City Soundtrack sound (let's say that my previous setting is more for the "Rentals" sound) :

Open Monark, go to the presets folder >>>>>> Lead >>>>>> Formica preset (the 5th preset).

Put the "Range" knob of the oscillator 1 on 16'.

Put oscillator 2 at 0 (=noon, for that just double click on it).

In the "mixer" section, put the volume of the oscillator 3 at 0 (= cut it off completely) and the volume of the oscillator 2 at 5 (= noon).

It will be the exact sound you are searching for :)

I might sound rude, but you really made a topic because you are too lazy to go through your sound libraries and ask others to do that for you? At least it proves how ultimately nice the people around here are. But it is a strange thing to ask for.

This is a true story: I was Googling this question right now, in 2017, and came upon this post, didn't realize it was me, and got super excited. #ambien

@inusable THANK YOU SIR. You are a God amongst men. I knew it was right under my nose!

@tulamide Wow. So this is a very disappointing account of what happened. Do you have Monark? Even without...

To my untrained-in-synth-effects ears, it is nearly impossible to distinguish the Formica preset as a starting point. I lied in my previous post -- I am an idiot and didn't knwo the basics. I now understand a small amount about oscillators but if you navigate to that preset, I, prior, would really not know why the sound seemed layered. Like I said, I basically knew nothing and had no clue what it would take to learn something. Wiht the knowledge I had, each effect/preset seemed like an equally good starting point.

This explains why it is not laziness. I could preset all day long and find nothing. Even now. That is why @inusable -- the nicest person ever -- had to explain the changes to make. Without these, the preset is not close (to me).

Lastly, I asked the question, no one had to answer. But in this forum, when we're bored, we like to help people out. For example, if someone needs help, I don't know, purchasing a new mac, I wouldn't say, "Hey, read the the apple store website, jerk!" (I used to work at the apple store). I'd ask what they need the machine for, check some discount sites, etc, and make a recommendation.

    Don't be a meanie head.

You don't need anything else but Logic Pro X.
I would tweak this sound in ES1 or ES2.
You'll not necessarily get better results with other synths.
ES2 can do much more than that, but it's an easy task once you spent a little time to get familiar with it.

Ah, the ppl in here are just too kind.
Helping is good, but this seems like laziness...
If you want to be creative, learn how to use a couple of tools instead.
