yeah, for commercial purpose they won't release the i7 Extreme as the same price of other regulars i7. However i found quite odd that today laptop CPU really sucks compared to desktop ones, it's like 1/3 power ratio wich wasn't so big back in the 2007 when i bought my amd laptop.

2007 is like the bronze age in computer technology.I agree though.

That trend started with ULV Haswell CPUs (2013-2014), and it's 100% real. Even top-end laptop workstations only get 15W TDP quad-core with only about 3200 Passmark score. My Ivy-based quad-core laptops are 3 times more powerful, reaching well over 9000 Passmarks, even though they are 4 years old. They also run much more power efficient compared to Haswell, and are on par with Broadwell and Skylake around x22 multiplier.
Core2Duo is still my most favourite generation (Merom and Penryn) and several 45nm Penryn CPUs actually crushed Sandy Bridge in regard to efficiency, as they allow on-chip undervolting.

Good ol' T7200 runs nice and smooth even now, but the software has to be optimized. Obviously, it doesn't perform well enough for smooth internet browsing, as that's anything but properly optimized.
But for creative tasks, it's still a great performer.

Thanks for the tip. Yes, it supports up to hexa core phenom II. Might be worth it.

So... Even if we don't take into account the massive overclocking potential the i7 2700K had... Do you really consider a 25% increase in performance after 5 processor generations not being stalled?

And I thought my trusty i7 2600 was getting old. You cheered up my day! :mates:

I did exactly that and now I am using phenom ii 925 quad core; I was now planning to get either phenom six core for cheap or fx-6300 but I changed my mind and this month it is going to be 2x8gb low latency ram to replace 2x4gb normal latency ddr3. For vsti it is a better choice - this way I can keep firefox up without worrying. - back to the topic..
Does anyone know what socket will Zen use? Is am3+ possible or am4 compatible possibly with my am3+ motherboard?

Let me let you all in on a not so secret industry secret. Intel is always 5 years ahead of the technology that they provide to the public. How do I know this? I worked as a tech there for 3 years and got to know some of the engineers. This was a few years ago, but I'm sure their business plan hasn't changed that much since then. So we're basically stuck buying old technology touted as "new and state of the art" so to speak. I would presume that Intel isn't the only company that works this way.

    Smart decisions.
No,unfortunately its not compatible.New socket is AM4,not back compatible either.
One thing good about phenoms is that they are rather cheap now and mother boards are easily obtainable unlike pentium older motherboards which are either very scarce or expensive.
You can easily build a few farming pcs with phenoms.

yeah that how market works today, it's not about how much power they can offer to you it's all about how much money they can make from you. The real successor of your 2600 are the i7 Extreme wich can be 4x times powerful but they cost money...

Yep, hella expensive and you also need a very expensive motherboard for it. But hey, if you can afford it why not.

Yeah, I agree on that point that fair and real competition would be great but its not gonna happen with this.
They proved it themself and I knew it. I told you guys a long time ago.

That's funny, I worked as a Tech for AMD. I can tell you that they are still cutting expenses in every single department.
AMD is going down, slowly but surely.
And to be totally honest, I dont see how they can survive the next 3 years.
I would love to see them back up in business but there's not a single evidence that this is going to happen.

Yes, AMD always win graphics battle. But this post is about microprocessors. And intel's 6th gen core i series processors are good competitors for APUs.

And we always received a shit ton of Bug / update unavailable /Inompatibility issues / burned Hardware call.
Not to point out that we were instructed to make the client prove that the bug was on the hardware and that they had to ask their resellers before us ( so the reseller would send them back to us ).
Oh my oh my...so happy to not be there anymore.

well, AMD was boasting about "revolutionary new cpu" already in the 80s with clones of the i8086 along with NEC, Zilog, and ST Micro so let me say they lost their edge already a long time ago, i gave Amd 3 chances and they never delivered as expected :(
