Neil Young said in 2012, “Steve Jobs was a pioneer of digital music. But when he went home, he listened to vinyl.”


This wasn’t a just wealthy man indulging in some hipster fantasy. Jobs’s analog roots ran deep, stretching back to at least to 1982. That’s when photographer Diana Walker snapped this candid portrait of him in his Woodside, California home. Other than the Tiffany lamp, the room’s only furnishings are a clutch of stereo components and a small stack of vinyl LPs.
The shiny boxes loom large in the background like sacred totems, which is precisely what they were to Jobs. They embodied everything he held dear in high-end industrial design: clean lines, quality materials and workmanship, outstanding performance–price be damned. Although he would eventually upgrade to far more exotic equipment, like six-figure Wilson Audio speakers, this old school rig is still considered serious audio porn today. It should have been shipped off to the Smithsonian, preserved behind glass. But, like so many of the toys that famous men collect, it simply disappeared. Fortunately, the photograph and the forensic evidence it contains, remain.

For the curious, if you were to put together this same stereo rig today by picking up the components on the used market, it would cost about $8,200 — not including the records.

Yea but it talks about his analog roots,like as if impressive discovered vinyl in 2010,that would have been his roots.

 

Yeah, but maybe Steve Jobs bought a new CD player a week after that photo was taken, and then he had a thought that he could now make a gadget to listen to digital music on the move

Up until 1982 everybody was into analogue not just Steve, as there was no other choice. Besides Steve wasn't an inventor, he just "borrowed" other peoples ideas

 

Maybe the room was chosen by the photographer or he was a lover of empty spaces.

 

The man could have bought anything at that time,he was already a millionaire,yet all he wanted was a nice audiophile stereo system.
Which means that music is the ultimate high.

 

I like it though.

 

Knowing the key properties of analog technology is certainly a good basis for developing great digital systems.

 

it's obviously well known how much Steve loved music, but it's like you just copied and pasted a clickbait article.
when Steve was growing up vinyl would of been the only choice, the guy was smart enough to know that vinyl is better but mp3 is more convenient.

on another note.

i'm pretty sure there is a scene in one of the many Steve Job's biopics that replicates the picture.

I admired this man. When he died, he took Apple with him. When Steve left as the CEO, Apple turned into CrApple. Tim Cook is a douchebag. I hate that guy. I bet Apple is inventing dildos for gay men like Tim Cook right now, but meanwhile I can't seem to find a "cut" option in Finder because one doesn't exist. They got rid of midi playback support in Finder, too. What the hell? What did Midi files do to you? Oh that's right. Cuz then more people with midi files floating around, could be dumb & buy logic pro. Yeah well joke's on you, Apple. I pirated Logic Pro. I won't buy it either. Lol. That's one of the few software I make money off of but won't buy. Apple doesn't deserve any more money from me. In fact, I'm really close to jumping ship to microsoft.
