I've absolutely fallen in love with that particular workflow design as a way to trigger long overlooked one shot samples whether they be drums, melodic stuff or neuro basses. It's absolutely wonderful to be able to use them in a generative fashion when programming beats and stick lfo's on the selectors to randomize different things to your liking.

Is there anyway to replicate this workflow in a software sampler not attached to any particular DAW so that I can use this method in any DAW? Also I've been wondering if there is someway to get more than 128 samples into them as well. Any tips would be highly appreciated =)

If I understand you correctly, you can load a sample per velocity (127) and you can MIDI humanize (or randomize) velocity so that you get a new sample every time there is a new note-on.
Is that what you mean?
If you want more samples you just load another 127 to a new note/pad and they will assign themselves to each velocity value.

You can get more than 128 a couple ways. I assume you are working with a 128 controlled by a selector knob macroed to a pitch midi device within a drum rack. That's how I make them, and it's how most people use 128s in ableton. If you wanted more you could keep the per-key layout but group another sampler to the rack and use the chain selector to switch between two samplers, each controlled by the pitch device. Then you could have twice as many. Theoretically you could probably have 128 parallel samplers, controlled by the rack's chain selector... so 128 x 128 drums. And if you really wanted to go crazy, you could start velocity layering those samples. 128 x 128 x 128?

Anyway, my take on this is that it's all too impractical to set up and far too unwieldy to be worth the while. But the capability is there

 

You could do it with a MIDI Note Transpose VST sending MIDI to pretty much any sampler.
I've done it with Battery.
If you're just going for randomness, keep in mind that Battery has a Round Robin and a Random Cycle under Setup > Cell Activation: Condition.
You can even set the position of the sample in the RR Cycle for a little more controlled randomness.

To everyone who's asking me to clarify my question. The video @tidus1990 posted is mostly what I'm referring to. If there are easy ways to replicate the same workflow in a software sampler.

What I mean by the generative stuff the fact that I can assign lfo's with different rates on them within Ableton's sampler to play a different note range within the sampler every time that particular note is triggered. I've been mostly using it to layer different claps together in a way that sounds more realistic in terms of how a crowd claps and randomize how they are played. It's an incredibly useful way to make super spacey beats along the lines of Eskmo and Amon Tobin.

@Cav Emp I appreciate that, I know you have somewhat answered that same question before but I appreciate your patience. I wish you had a different answer for me this time in terms of setting up Ableton's sampler with more then 128 sounds but yeah you're totally right it is totally unrealistic as a way to set stuff up for practical usage =P

@Pinkman , I didn't know that about Battery perhaps I will look into it more. I'm definitely going to use your bidule configuration with Maschine and Ableton as a way to use those sample chains in another DAW. Also J's tools never seize to amaze me in the practicality of their usage.

@Qrchack I've definitely considered both options but working within Kontakt as well as Reaktor, usually feels generally overwhelming and totally terrifying! Still though I've been considering setting up all my one shots within Polyplex as a way to layer samples together and create unique sounding one shots.

 

Not to worry. I remembered a similar thread recently but had no idea who is was. It's not a big deal. I like shooting the shit about music stuff and Ableton is where I'm most competent so I'm happy to help.

The latest betas have some sort of new 16-velocity something or other added to simpler. Search Ableton Beta Release Notes if you're interested.
I haven't really bothered to find out what it's all about because I really don't do much with velocity layering.

 

I saw this title & thought it was gonna be one of our "notoriously noobish" members (I think you know who I mean) asking how to quantize midi notes to 1/128th triplets.
