I'd like to offer this thought: when you read a book or newspaper article and spot a typo you are amused or angered. When you listen to a live orchestra and notice that someone makes a mistake, however small, it bothers you. The written word and written music or composition is by definition perfection. No one's ever going to be sure if the master composers would be happy for their music to be 'interpreted' or played differently to the way the composer intended it to be played, the way the music is actually written down to be played. I think that the reason people find today's produced music to be too perfect is that when it is perfect it is even clearer to hear a lack of musical inspiration and it is easier to hear a lack of original musical creativity. I think that in these early days of musical technology it is easy for telentless and un-inspired so-called musicians to hide behind 'mistakes' and 'imperfections'. The written word and properly written or composed music are by their very nature 'perfect'. It is human to err but creations of real art are finished, and they're perfect creations in that sense of 'perfect' and not intended to be altered.

If i could understand what you just wrote i could certainly reply.

 

I think that the discussion is about music, not about image. Image is a tool used to stick out from the crowd, something that will hopefully draw the attention towards the song(s)......that is a very different discussion, though I can easily understand why the diffusion is happening.
Still, that's another discussion topic worth while.......

please take some time and put some very favorite songs to many, like for instance 'Go your own way-Fleetwood Mac' or 'Hotel California-Eagles' or any of the songs by the band mentioned it the first post (Van Halen) on a grid and you'll find out that they go off grid constantly, though we never experience any fluctuation in the tempo at all! They are classic pop songs known worldwide, standards.Why? Coz the natural feel and song evolvement has a perfect flow. Put them 'on the grid' and they don't sound the same!

It was a small digression in response to the poster who mentioned dehumanisation, and I think is was relevant as what we seem to be experiencing with all this new technology is the dumbing down of music towards the lowest common denominator, while at the same time amplifying the message visually. Maybe the underage girls being targeted are not quite capable of downloading the message directly from the music?

 

Great and yet, macabre question mate. Because it's actual. Someone at Sony, BMG, Warner, Universal is actually brainstorming on the very topic as we speak ....

 

You don't have to spend years learning how to be a musician anymore, so the barriers to agenda driven subversion have been lowered dramatically through the aid of technology

Analogue tape days didnt have gazillion tools to help you expose everything in music.
Just think about it,today we have all the tools from analyzers to the grid where you can see every tiny small mistake,off grid notes etc.
I actually started to ignore a lot of these tools i already took for granted and now im more relying on my ears instead of my eyes.
Wow,huge difference.
Now,dont get me wrong lots of electronic producers are actually welcoming these tools,because they produce mechanical sounding music,on the grid is what they call their home.
But many of us who want more in music,that feel,that groove etc,have been lured into using these same tools that actually ruin our effort.
Why?
Because its available.

Also in the old days the basis of every track was usually recorded live, with all of the musicians in the same room, so you could say the process was more organic.

My grandmother liked David Bowie, and Queen, they were family friendly.
