All I can really find is the Korg Kaoss pad which has more features than I need and, at $350, is more than I'm willing to pay for something as simple as an XY pad.

Edit: there's also one by a company called icon creative for $70 that unfortunately seems to get a lot of unfavorable reviews

if you like it small.. yes, or ... why not a used padkontrol, great pads, XY window a la NanoPad
but more control, more options, totally happy with the used one I bought.

NanoPad appears to be just a scaled down version of the padkontrol

@notremid thing has a bit of an odd look to it... you have researched the capabilities ?
it looks a bit on the flimsy side.. but pics can be deceiving of course

@Herr Durr It definitely looks a little flimsy but the Push is all I'll ever need out of a pad grid. I made that mistake with buying the TFP, which is about to have a (hopefully) happy new home elsewhere. There's just nothing any other set of pads can do that I don't already get from the Push. I'd be happy to spend even less and get an XY pad without anything else. There's also the little matter of limited real estate of my tabletop. I already have the Push front and center and a Launchkey 25 off to the side where it's barely even accessible. Another regular sized controller and I'd have to buy a stand. It's worth noting I did see the padkontrol before and didn't even realize there was an XY pad on it. I just saw the pads.

@notremid this might be exactly what I need. Much appreciated!

Edit - I actually meant to tag @Studio 555 above. The one that @notremid posted up looks sweet too, but as long as it's all the same XY pad I'd rather spend less instead of more. I don't need any more control knobs or keys. Just the XY pad :like:

If you want a smooth, slim, very touch sensitive type of controller get a cmc-pd.
A lot better than nanopad and you can also use it for key commands, sensitivity is very similar to a touch screen phone.

Depends what you want it for. As a basic tool, the Korg Nano's are good. If you want something dedicated, you could buy a XY MIDIpad by AmpTone Lab. They do two sizes and these are the ones usually installed into guitars, but you could mount it on anything really. I have one on my guitar and they are pretty awesome as a simple XY midi pad.

    You got a laptop?
Then you can just use Tablet2Midi.

    You got a smartphone?
Then there's TouchOSC, Lemur, and many other simple MIDI controller apps, some of them are free.

I'm more interested in the actual XY aspect for things like the XY pads in Omnisphere's Orb, Loom's Morph, Image Line has one in Harmor and Sytrus, Live devices with XY pads, etc etc. Would just be nice to not have to use two knobs (or a mouse) for that stuff.

That's a neat little controller though. I assume it works with stuff other than Cubase? You wouldn't be trying to coerce me into Cubase by having me buy incompatible hardware would you?

I did see that one, but it seems to get more bad reviews than any of the others so I decided to avoid it.

I'd stay away from any of the products in the Korg Nano Line. I bought a nano-keyboard and the keys were hit or miss. Sometimes they just didn't go off. I don't know if this was a manufacturing error and I got one that was lined up to the motherboard badly, or if it was just a bad product. But I wouldn't personally buy another off that line again because they are a bit flimsy either way.

Better off finding something used in a similar price range that is more solid.

    So true.

Cool thing about Lemur and (TouchOSC to a degree) is you can make your own templates and set up pages of XY pads, encoders, faders and buttons.
I created a template that has one big XY on page 1, 4 more on page 2 and then 8 on page 3 (pages are tabbed at the top of the screen). You can assign the same MIDI CC/OSC target to multiple pads so you don't lose control of the XY on page 1 when you move to page 2 or 3.
Configuration can get pretty deep when you realize that you can adjust things like resistance, attraction, spring, speed and even deeper with the four different physics modes.
I almost forget. You can have a regular XY with standard X and Y (and Z) coordinates or you can add four more and you've created an envelope control.

    Edit - Multiballs. Not breakpoints.

Vestax pad one. Very well built, easily assignable pads and x/y. Great sensitivity but underrated. My best buy to date.

Yo, any xbox controller will give you 2 x y controllers, a bunch of buttons and 2 pressure sensitive triggers. Also the wireless and drivers are solid. Then you can have fun flying in your automation. Ableton sees it right out the box without any midi apps

One more touchpad MIDI controller app, but far newer [updated 2015], open source, and only for Linux here: https://github.com/ssj71/touchMIDI

Whoever wants that old LiveLab touchpad MIDI controller app [that works only in Windows] can get it directly from here: http://www.zenpho.co.uk/touchpad2midi.zip

I bought Novation Remote 37 mostly for its XY pad and Joystick. If you can find one on the cheap I can only recommend it, but take good care of it because those are not made very sturdy. However, as a bonus you get great and easy to use sliders and knobs, and great little 3oct keyboard. You can get it for about a 100 quid or less from eBay.

    Cheeers!
