Thanks for the food for thought, I am actually in fact a classically trained musician. I really dove into theory when I was 9, and then later on in Middle School I joined the band program and picked up the french horn (and was given a painful review on more theory, along with more knowledge...) After that, I actually took a music composition elective that nearly murdered me, so it's safe to say I know music pretty well. I feel like a lot of that previously acquired knowledge has sadly been no help when it comes to understanding how sound works, mixing, etc. aka the more audio side of things in the digital music world. I feel like it probably would be a safe route to just get reaper and then build up a collection of plugins, it would give me the most customization. I do wish I could get Logic though, but sadly I'm probably going to be stuck on PCs for a very long time. :/

Digital world does not add anything new to the music world except some minimal styles.

I'm really happy we have you here. I'm ready to change all of my digital knowledge with your classically acquired ones.

Ah, thank you~. And perhaps you can teach me a thing or two about digital music, a knowledge exchange. Feel free to shoot me a PM, I'd be happy to teach you what I can about traditional music theory. :D What I'm excited for though is to give this forum that and my knowledge on virtual singers..

Don't forget to check out the free plugins as well (e.g. at KVR). There's a lot of really valuable stuff around, both in the VST and VSTi department.

This will also save you money to put towards a better midi controller. Why do I say this? Well, I noticed on the live chat feed as I signed in, that you want to learn how to play piano/keyboard. That little MPK won't help you. I know, as I have an LPK. It makes chords a nightmare really, because it's size makes it so hard to get the correct pressure on the keys at the same time, even for someone with small hands like me.
Also, you want something that you can map to your soft synths, lots of sliders, knobs, wheels, xy pad, joystick, ribbon etc. Obviously you don't need to have them all, but you want to be able to interact and change perimeters without having to use your mouse all the time. This will increase your enjoyment, and as you play a musical instrument, you'll want a more hands on feel to what your doing.
Lots of practice, experimentation, and finishing tracks, even if they don't great at first, the more you finish the better you will get. If you get stuck, there's plenty of people here that will help.
Absolutely nothing wrong with PCs for making music.
Thought you might like this. Free online piano tutorials. The guys kninda funny, so it's not so boring to watch.

That's a very tainted view you have there. The digital world can be a sonic dreamscape, but you have to loosen that tight grip on classical music theory and open your mind.
Did you download that vst I told you to. The vector synthesis on the Wavestation is awesome fun.

Never said there was a problem, I just wish that Apple didn't have the rights to Logic.. Also, I have an electric Piano so ofc I wouldn't be learning on my little mpk.. I've been wanting to upgrade for some time though and will at some point, since I've encountered some minor problems with my mpk (idk why but a usb no longer fits in the port.. -__-)

Reaper is nice and is only $60. It doesn't comes with any bundled instruments (which kinda sucks for people who buy their stuff and want quality plugins right off the bat, but considering the price of the personnal license it's more than acceptable.) You should also take a look at Sonar, it comes with a lot of GREAT instruments and you don't have to pay the full price right away, you can subscribe monthly instead, which is a great.

Are you you talking the PC usb or the micro usb to the controller. If the PC side, check the plastic hasn't come loose, or any residue on the metal. If it's the MPK side check to see if anything in the MPK side socket is bent, as it's not very strong.

@mouse yeah I still have a wee bit of a soft spot for mixcraft.. it was the one I used most before I settled on Reaper..

I felt it was a pretty simple one to get used to recording with, fairly straightforward, if a bit cartoonish in the gui..
then I wasn't wow'ed with the instruments, and even their pianissimo was only fair to middling for a piano...
never heard anyone celebrating either the daw or the instruments/fx but it was a fun one to use as a beginner

    Price is right also... behold

    Thanks bro!
    I'm working on it.
Yes, of course but 1 in 1000 ones would know what he's doing. No one would be a philosopher by owning 10 tons of philosophy books.

interestingly, the best selling record of that year. Did the mainstream really ever had taste at one point in history? Apparently so...

you listed a lot of subjective points, because i dont agree that FL is the fastest, because i was always faster with ableton.
Ableton has too drag and drop and i am pretty sure others have too.
i find the FL GUI bloated, because for example the Logic(9 or X with skin) GUI or the Ableton GUI are simpler, more minimalistic.
Easiest is also very subjective, because this point doesnt say much. for example lets say you start in a daw, let it be Reaper, you will be as lost as you are in FL, because you have no clue whats going on. the same goes for all other daws.
over time you gain some kind of common sense, how a daw gui should work and when you then start in Ableton(coming from FL), you think somehow FL is super easy compared to Ableton.

Memory friendlist is also not really sure, because it all depends on which plugins you use.
so far i know bitwig/Ableton use 130MB with an empty project, FL does that with 120 i think.
but it all depends how it will handle plugins omnisphere and that depends most of the time on the plugin itself, the wrapper for the vst only puts safe that the plugin is loaded and interpreted right as it should.

about the Automation and curves stuff: it again depends what you want to create with that daw, i dont think you need superawsome automation curves, it can distract you.
