    Hi All,

Firstly i want to say i'm not a guitarist but love this sound and want to recreate it, i've managed to record the notes and now am stuck with the effects used.

14 seconds in there's a lead guitar sound, I can hear delay and distortion and a bass layer but love the way it detunes itself. Would love it if someone could break it down for me.

    thanks

Think of an era of no plugins for this sound. In this superb work, Another Green World, Eno used (and abused) a lot the first Eventide racks.
You can try with this: No Warez links :) Good luck.

Eno collaborated with great musicians, esp to mention Robert Fripp, the most innovative guitarsounddesigner of the late 60s and 70s.
I also may mention one of my Bass heroes Percy Jones.
I own this Vinylrecord und listen to it since back then.
Google "Frippertronics" and maybe listen to other records like My Life in the Bush of Ghosts and Exposure
but "another green world" is really something special.

Damn it felt good hearing this stuff again. Totally into that Roxy, Bowie, Fripp, Hammill, Eno, Sylvian, Crimson etc. sound.

Eno is incredibly inventive, he does stuff through experimentation, so it would be pretty tough to second guess what he is actually doing. Also he's probably already forgotten more things than we will ever know :)

When it comes to Eno there are no rules. If it sounds good it is good

This is still one of my favorite albums ..

Yeah, Google Robert Fripp and Frippertronics and you'll get info on most of Eno's best guitar lead in many of his tracks. As mentioned above My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts is one of my favorite albums of all time. Warm Jets, Taking Tiger Mountain, and Another Green World are so great as well. The guitar lead on Baby's On Fire screams insanity. He worked with some other greats besides Fripp.

It's Eno himself on guitar; probably through a Fuzz Face or Big Muff (being the '70s), though the overdrive isn't that strong. There is echo (Roland Space Echo?) and phasing on it.

On the tracks In Dark Trees and The Big Ship Eno shunned his enlisted band of musicians and played every single instrument himself, including various synthesisers such as the Minimoog and VCS3. He used his Revox A77 tape recorders for both recording and processing and also manipulating using varispeed and looping and created synthetic percussion and a treated rhythm generator.
That delay has such a unique analog quality, the way it decays, it will be challenging to emulate...

I wonder if he used a slide on the guitar to get the detuning?

it makes me a bit wistful... and well a bit sad.. to look back on these.. seeming to be a lost era of creativity , and spontaneity

I shudder upon returning to the present to reflect upon what is being "produced" these days...

@Jazz-N-Stuff thanks for sharing that rare and truly inspired performance... I dare to admit it made me lachrymose

for the guitar sound , it seems a SLIDE guitar to me, played with a heavy metal piece, and all the effects mentioned already.
And yes, i was lucky to be part of the years 67-77 which are the most creative in pop music.
I have been to several big Festivals (in Germany) and always had a big Stereo System, a hobby of mine.
Let me add more inspirational stuff:
search in YT for La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Pierre Henry and Pierre Schaeffer
here some views on very old equipment in the 50s:

Em... i don't think fuzz face or big muff can be that subtle. I think this is just an amp running somewhat hot. The "detuning" is definitely just a guitar player using a slide. The delay may be space echo indeed.
