These three dimensional arrays are indispensable if you are looking to create a well balanced sound canvas. The unique radiation of various acoustic instruments is a very interesting subject and not as very straight forward as I had believed, and it surprised me when I first came across different studies on this subject (and made me think aloud, damn, I should have known that). Of course ones ear is all importent in microphone placement, however images such as these can help us to plan out a concise plan of action in capturing an array of acoustic sources, that so when combined in the mix we can inform a realistic sense of eveness in the way of spectral dimensionality (if that is your objective).

If you search with the word "radiation" after the instrument of your choice you can probably find what you are looking for.

 

PS...that fellow with the bass looks a lot like Jaco Pastorius.

Thanks superliquidsunshine but I already know you can find a lot places where they want to guide you regarding this issiue!

Reason I posted this was the fact you have a great view of how it all looks in action and examples of how it sounds etc.

If the bass player should look like Jaco Pastorius????:

All I can see is they both have a long hair

Your post is definitely a fantastic resource and one that I have never seen before. I just threw in my 2cents as an added bonus and addendum to the great information that you graciously share.
