Is there any news on this? It would be very good if everything about the template is crystal clear, before people get to far into their tracks, cheers.

Can I still join? Literally just saw the thread as it popped up on the front page of the sister site. I'd pick Fantasy and Nostalgia.

I wrote a 30 clip to test the waters with libraries and my own composition skills, and making a lengthy track is going to be a big task, one that i am already working towards :D. I think the setup and libraries, gain staging, expression/dynamic finetuning and riff progression make this a big undertaking.

yeah I thought I had signed up by posting at the start of this thread but don't think I was on the other....having two threads is a bit confusing. Did we have to definitely 'sign up' or just submit a composition before the due date.

Any updates from the organisers please ? :)

There are basically two ideas so far
@Introninja 's proposal is outlined in the first post.
I was more inclined to letting participants make more than one track (actually a couple of short cues, just like for real motion picture), based on the story. Each participant would receive a portion of the story to score music to - a series of cues which will be then joined in post production based on album needs, rather than making single track focused on single emotion.
This would be more work for us, but enable more flexibility.
Also I can't imagine composing 5-minute track which is supposed to invoke only single emotion. That would, in my opinion, get old very quickly.

However this scenario might be more challenging, because those cues that do not fit the story well, would have to be rescored by the participant responsible, or rejected and given to other person to fix. And it'd get fairly complicated (administratively) fairly quickly.
There are pros and cons to both ideas.

Thank god this was said, i was wondering how the flip i was gonna stretch one track to fit the timing limit, even though im starting a track with a lot more singular instruments so hopefully theres more space and time to cover and convey the moods/emotions listed in the OP.

I've got my full '5 minutes of chosen emotion' just about finished I think.....problem is though I wasn't totally sure if I was on the right track as far as the emotion and/or story concepts were concerned. hope I haven't jumped the gun too much but if it turns out I cant submit it then it was still a good exercise and enjoyable to do.

This is why I suggested having movie clips from Youtube to compose to, as that way you can link to clips that you feel follow the story.

When researching I noticed that most were only 2 to 3 minutes max, and a lot only one and a half. Longer tracks were generally for opening and closing credits.

I feel that to follow one story there are too many options. With all the options trailers would be a better choice, as it's easy to find a trailer for your chosen genre, turn down the music and compose to the visuals you're seeing. Also you could pre choose the trailers to fit the feel you want for the album.

This is why a have stopped for the moment, bar some sound design and research.

Trailer music is IMHO not the right way to do it. Each of the trailer cues is expected to hit climax at one point. Imagine hearing the same or very similar stinger 52 times throughout the album each participant have a turn. Then the whole album be just a sampler of trailer music cues, unfit for end user.

Instead of basing the story on motion picture and having each member score music to one reel, why not a book? Kinda what M. Oldfield did to C. Clarke's "Songs of Distant Earth".
I understand there are a lot more practical considerations to this, rather than making one track for one (two) emotions, but in the end, the result might get more interesting.

I esteem it a great honor to be in the list but I'm not ready yet. Maybe the next one after I compensated the lack or insufficiency of knowledge in these fields.
