There is a book on our sister site titled: "Who did it first? - Great Pop Cover Songs and Their Original Artists".
One of my favorite covers is: Ghost Riders in the Sky - Johnny Cash .

I believe that Prince wrote that song, gave it to Sinead, and then rescinded and told her not to do it. So she did it.

Also, Sinead just kills it on that song. Some of the greatest vocals I've ever heard, ever. That is one of the first examples, to me, that somebody can do a cover and perform it better than the original.

Here´s the story of the song:

"Nothing Compares 2 U" is a song written and composed by Prince for one of his side projects, The Family album by The Family band. It was later made famous by Irish recording artist Sinéad O'Connor, whose arrangement was released as the second single from her second studio album, I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got. This version, which O'Connor co-produced with Nellee Hooper, became a worldwide hit in 1990. A music video, which has been described as iconic, was shot and received heavy rotation on MTV. Its lyrics explore feelings of longing from an abandoned lover's point of view.

Let me add a Gen-X first-hand perspective, to the Wikipedia info:

    • Prince was in love with Susannah Melvoin, and he wrote the song specifically about her.
    • All of the songs he wrote for the The Family, would be considered important & defining Prince songs.... most people were sure he would use these songs for personal performance (which he did).
    • Although Prince had nothing to do with O'Connor's production of the song, it still had the minimalist instrumental feel of "When Doves Cry" and the Family's "River Run Dry"...... Drum (machine) and only one instrument grouping (Orchestra/synth) ...... "River Run Dry" was drum and string section, only.
    • The media, at the time, made sure the public knew the song was written by Prince, so it had that extra push on the charts. Compound that with O'Connor's amazing vocals, and the captivating moody feel of the video, there was no way Prince could (or would) throw a fit about her cover of it......... so instead, he privately 'attacked' her about her personality during interviews.
