I need a new pair of PC speakers and I was thinking to buy the M-Audio AV42, what's your opinion about it?
I know they aren't the best choice for music production but I can't spend too much and maybe they could suit well in a bedroom.

Indeed, they are a bit pricier, but if @Diabulus in Musica can make the stretch, they are worth it.

Dont buy shit or you will buy twice.Think about it,you will spend all that time writing and producing music and in the end you will not be able to properly hear what is going on,meaning it may sound like shit.
So save your money, sell something, dont make that mistake of buying consumer speakers for music production, jbl is some serious tool for the money.

You want not so good speakers for mixing. If you make the mix good on those, it will translate to almost all other speakers. That is why yamaha NS-10's are in all pro studios. I've used them many times and they sound like crap until you get a good mix going. I have JBL 305's and the sub to match. They have a midrange honk to them that when compensated for (lower the mids in the mix a bit) will sound good on other systems. There are other speakers that are much better but are more expensive so you might want to save a little longer to get them.

    M-Audio what!? :winker:

If we're talking cables, then maybe.

With M-Audio you have to be aware of one thing: it's consumer crap. It's something you buy to get by. It is priced as low as it is because it's true worth is even less. They are making crapload of money from people who think they're buying quality things at great prices. My experiences with their products tell me otherwise.

Save some money. Buy a decent product that is worth the [little] money. Something that will last longer than 3 years covered by warranty. Yamaha HS50M or JBL. Nothing too fancy, but your money will be well spent.

Ask yourself: what does a decent speaker cost? I'll tell you, it's at least 300-400 euro per *active* speaker. And then you have to add something for the manufacturer on top of that price. Everything else is garbage with great PR. Lies upon lies.

All arguments about quality are true; however, when money is an issue, you have to make do with what you can put your hands on. Based on this, these would be my choices:

    Winner - JBL 305
    Runner Up - Presonus Eris
Plain Loser (not recommendable) - M-Audio

Guys...you are right but the problem is, beside money, it makes no sense to buy a pair of JBL 305 to use them with an integrated audio card.

  15. before movin' to something serious i always worked with a pair of Samson MediaONE 4A... not a beast on the low freqs but quite neutral indeed... i've made a lot of music with them with integrated card and cheap usb devices...

Then sorry, I thought we were talking about a higher quality setup for mixing and tracking. I am not very familiar with consumer speakers.

Don'r worry, somebody will jump in with an idea. But in this context... for "doodling with audio" as I call it, and listening to music, maybe M-Audio is not such a bad idea. :winker:

I dont't know if people will disagree, but I think going for one of these interfaces will be better than going through the integrated sound device:

    http://www.music-group.com/Categories/Behringer/Computer-Audio/Audio-Interfaces/UCA202/p/P0484

It's the most basic Behringer audio interface and it goes for around 30 bucks, even less because they abound on the second-hand market. If you don't get a lot of audio quality improvement (that I don't know), for sure you get easier connectivity and more flexibility for very little money.

1212m emu cards sell for 30$ sometimes, you can get pro mix/mastering done with it.Its a no brainer.
Still better converters than anything under 300 eur today.
