Scarlett intererfaces have been fine for me. No problems. When I did the customer service was great.

The drivers even the new beta ones are working fine on win 10 x64 pro now. The preamps are focusrite so they are quality.

They not the top end of the market but i have two and never had a problem. I had an 8i6 and an 18i20 and they havent let me down yet. You also get some software chucked in.

Consider how many ins and out you want. Also new gigabyte motherboards are almost all thunderbolt compatible so check if you got a port. If you haven't you can always install a card. The installation is a pain in the ass but deffo check out the claret (allthough 400 dollars you not going to get one) range because thunderbolt in all honesty the way forward rather than USB 3.

If u notice there not to many manufactures making usvb 3 interfaces now. Reason is probably the only added benefit of usb 3 is bandwidth which means you can runs load s of I/O's together.

The average home user simply does not need all those i/o's.

Consider also a small desktop unit like the new SPL crimson or RME Babyface which are superb all though again pushing your budget :-(

However that said scarlet has been great for me. Babyface gonna cost more than 400 dollars and a crimson will push it all the way .

I would spend the majority of your budget on the interface but you also going to need monitors or good headphones.

To be honest with you I think you are going to be quite hard pushed with that budget but the option you have chosen is a good one but definitely keep checking out as many as you can and think about the ins out etc what you might need in the future.

    Best of Luck

If I were you, I'd get the Behringer UMC404. Solid metal body, 4 inputs, each with pad and Hi-Z switch, you have A/B outputs (different pair of speakers to switch between), inserts on each input (eg. put vocals through hardware compressor before it gets to your DAW), and 1/4" jack connectors for 4 outputs it has, as well as cinch (Focusrite has only cinch). You also have XLR output for your speakers as opposed to jack only. As a bonus, it can run without USB, powered from the wall with included power supply - you can use it as a mixer should you ever need it. And it's $100, as opposed to $180. Unlike other Behringer stuff, this is full metal body, nice, precise knobs - actually they feel way more solid than ones in Presonus Audiobox USB. They also made ASIO drivers for it, unlike some of their mixers where they just say "download ASIO4All". There's like 8 modes in the driver to choose from to cut the latency down a little bit (default is Safe, there's like Extra Safe, Standard and so on). Plus with 4 inputs you're good to go if you ever feel like recording. And it's still cheaper than the Scarlett.

Edit: Also, if you're looking for what to get for the extra $80 you save, get a Behringer C1 or Samson C01 plus a pop filter!
