Reason is, at best, a stuck-in-the-90s niche product. At worst, a stuck-in-the-90s irrelevance.

i agree with you, but it is still a lot of fun.
i think of it as more of a really powerful plugin than a DAW. rewire it with your DAW of choice and its a beast

reason is a beast if you know how to use it you can make some things that you can't make in regular daw's if you master it

What I used to like about Reason (up until v.5) was the simplicity. It was an amazing creative tool. Some awesome refills too.
The REX player, sample/loop browsing was fantastic. Easy to use sampler, very cool distortion Scream....
BUT it sounded, and still does, like Reason. I have R8, but never use it. Compared to other DAWs and Hardware, its like its
missing air or something. It sounds sort of compressed in a way.

It is a fun toy, and the routing stuff is fun. I might try the Rewire stuff again, but its not a very good way to work imo.

I was expecting something revolutionary like VST support.
They will consider this maybe in the next ten years...

Reason could be top-notch if only it accepts third party VTS's and VSTi. By the way, the Players feature is really nice. I might give it try for that feature only !:)

The pity is that the geniuses at Propellerhead don't seem to agree with this, as can be seen since Reason 1 was released, 16 years ago already...

i don't think it needs vst support (rack extensions are in a way better than vsts)
what it needs is propellerheads to allow developers to sell their own REs!
right now if you want, for example, Rob Papen Predator VST/AU and RE, you need to buy it twice, imo i think you should just be able to buy once and get all, so many more devs would jump on that and the RE marketplace would be x100 better

(also they really need to do something about the lack of plugin/device delay compensation)

I feel a bit bad for prop heads at one time reason was amazing & innovative as was rebirth, but i think they have flat lined. I do appreciate that you can do great things with it but i feel they need to go back to the drawing board with it or just bury it & do something new.

Reason was the first DAW that I learned to use, but gave it up with the release of version 6. I agree with others about the proprietary and inflexibility of its platform (doesn't allow for expansion/integration possibilities with other non-proprietary plugin software). And, in this day and age, that's certainly NOT forward-looking.

everything is said .... funny for kidding around ... I'm actually amazed that there's a 9th version coming out.
Even Fruity Loops managed to evolve a bit

People who diss it have probably not tried it since 5.0.1 32 bit version

It's now on 8.3.2, and I love it. Rewire it into Ableton and you have a beast of a modular synth patched in the box, without beginning to consider all the other instruments and effects. People really do need to begin to learn how to use software before dissing it based on a version from about 6/7 years ago! :dunno:

I am personally a bit disappointed with the updates though. Would have liked a new instrument/effect or two in there.

I own Reason 8.3, and I love the sounds that Reason is capable of, BUT... the interface is just too cluttered for me. That, and it is so isolated in terms of a DAW - its in a league of its own. This is a big commercial flaw on propellerheads' part. There are also tons of commercial monetary benefits that could come their way if they'd offer Reason as a VST/AU/AAX plugin for use in any DAW - rather than just rewire. Much like Maschine and Vienna Ensemble Pro can be - they have a standalone DAW and then they have a plugin that can act as a DAW inside a DAW - which is super cool IMHO. :guru:
I always said that if DAW developers were countries, Propellerheads would be North Korea, and Avid would be China. You may agree or disagree, but that's why it's just my opinion. Other than this, I adore the sounds and synths with Reason. Especially the Malstrom synth - that thing is badass!!
