Lots of daw's have the possibility to do an automatic backup in a certain amount of time.

I use Reaper and it makes a backup every 5 minutes (I had to set that up myself). So I can never lose more than 5 mins of work. And Reaper almost never crashes. Can't remember the last time.

Cubase, Reaper, Logic, ProTools, Buzz, Renoise, Zynewave Podium, X1, Reason...

Sounds like you need to fix/optimize your system first, or buy the actual DAW you are working with.

    hello, Amani,

the mentioned automatic backup saving might help in most cases (i usually do not use it but save the project at every needed occasion, quite often if i have finished some step in the workflow)... *yes*

it (at the user level) really depends on the system's configuration, the plug-ins in use, etc... :dunno:

i mostly do my work in pro tools, harrison mix bus, but also use ableton suite, audio mulch, plogue bidule, on osx, on windows, machines, very rarely happens that i lose any work... *yes*

if crashes happen too often, try to localize the plug-in (or the workflow step) causing it, if you can live without it or can use some similar, put it into another (plug-ins not in use, for example) folder for the occasions it really not needed, then when you want to use it (also want to risk the crashes), put it back to your working plug-ins directory (but save more often or use the auto backup function)...

it also helps if you try to minimize the number of plug-ins in use, filter them as needed, project dependently (i am sure that at the mixdown step one does not need his software instruments, for example), keep your system registry as clean as possible, defragment your drives, kill all not needed processes, cut the internet cable, etc... *yes*

    and most stable???

i have already crashed nearly every program i use (the exception is, ta-daaaaa, harrison mix bus), but it happens one time or two per year (often with fourteen hours of work days, nights), most rarely with pro tools, most often with plogue bidule (but really with the extremely complex setups only), ableton seems quite stabile (classy in-out what helps here i think)... *yes*

i hope this helps, if something (as usually does) comes into the sponge in my head, i will be back...

    hello again,

i do not think it depends much on the thing of buying or not, as most programs do use (with the exception of the hated hardware protection) license keys, serials, meaning the original program does not have to be changed, modified (of course there are the bad examples), so it must be caused by too much things on the system, etc. as i have mentioned before... *yes*

    all the best...

reaper has been the most stable for me. Im on windows. Its crashed only 3 or 4 times on me in over a year on 2 different versions (3&4). It takes a lil bit to get used to the workflow, but once you do its GREAT. Its 100% skinnable, so you can make it look like whatever DAW your used to. Make sure to grab the groove3 tutorial, REAPER Explained

Another great feature is it keeps your undo history all the way back to the beginning of the project. So if your not happy with that one track in your mix you can goto that event and just undo that step.

this is how i work. i make and arrange the beat in ableton, cuz its the fastest for me. I keep everything raw with minimal fx and mono if possible.

then i export the stems and mix and record in reaper, where i can pile on the fx and trackcount and not worry about it crashing.

This works for me really well for me

    you are very welcome... *yes*

yes, the things you wrote, surely will help... *yes*

on windows, save your system registry in text readable format (export all the different branches) before the big redo, then you (usually) do not have to install the stuff you use, saving lot of unneeded entries (put in by installers) in the registry (you can always search for the needed registry parts in the exported files, copy, paste, double click, ready)... *yes*

sorting out the things you use can also mean temporary solution schemes, what needed, you use, if need something else, put it back in, at some other workflow step you can use one other (already set up) scheme again, always efficiently, without lot of garbage... *yes*

these things take time to set up, but (on windows) really helped me to do my work more securely... *yes*

    all the best...

same here, setting everything up in ableton, audio mulch, plogue bidule, with the difference (at the end) of the use of pro tools, then for the stems, harrison mix bus... *yes*

ableton processes everything (even mono audio files) in stereo, with the use of mono audio files, sources, only disk space is saved, the number of needed processing cycles are the same (do not know, why it is better so, may be the internal routing is more simple, but fact, it is so)... *yes*

    all the best...

I know ableton processes/exports everything in stereo. But you know what i mean. i make music anticipating the mix down, so drum hits and basses and most stuff is kept mono. Unless its like a string bed, or a piano (from the player position) then you need the stereo. On my reaper toolbar is an icon that triggers a "downmix to mono" action on the selected track(s)

In the mixdown is where I create the stereo field, with panning and reverbs. I use Slate VCC on everything in reaper = you using harrison mixbus :mates:

First -- what were you using ?

Second -- there are so many variables that could cause instability in each application.
    • Make sure that your system meets the minimum requirements for the SW you are using
    • Often times software/OS conflicts cause crash or freeze symptoms(ie; plugIn incompatibilities)
    • Using cracked or patched software increases your chances of encountering this sort of problem
(often there are instructions written into the software code of these applications that check and validate; registration, libraries and directories, preference and installation files, and the program structure itself (to ensure that there has been no modifications to the code) -- sometimes, if any of these things are not in order - this will cause the application to freeze or crash)

Third -- your question will surely drum up everyone's opinionated response, and their loyal endorsement -- however, you will need to find your own way here, as much of these decisions are based on personal preference.

I suggest you watch some videos to get an idea of the basic look-feel and operation, do a bit of research, and plan on some hands-on field testing and experimentation.
