    Hey guys,

I'm trying to achieve lush, larger-than-life, darker reverb washes like these.

This sounds like a plate verb to me.

I'm currently using convolution plates and halls with longer pre-delay and low cuts to keep mixes mud free but my verbs aren't this huge and expansive.

Any suggestions as far as additional techniques, FX chains or specific reverb plugins most suited to these kinds of sounds?

    Thanks in advance!

I think for RY X, the voice is doubled on the L/R channels (stereo or mono I don't know, but I'm almost sure for this is employed in the choruses).
Maybe the main vocals are also send to some parallel reverb+stereo separation buses. The verses are also captured pretty close from the mic, it may be another cause... as the use of more than one mics.
If not, try another reverb like valhalla or epicverb (this one is freeware but algorithmic only). Lexicon PCM Large Hall has a wide large release too, like ERS emt250.

Interesting, I have tried using Valhalla Shimmer, Eventide Blackhole, Lexicon Halls and Phoenix verb as far as algo plugs but still no dice... Going to look into Epicverb! Thanks for your input!

Background voices (different performances, not doubled) that are panned, pre-effects, will lend a lot of spatiality's sake. It's a matter of balancing delay (echo) and reverb (and its predelay and early-reflection settings). The "Alcratraz" IRs in Altiverb are extreme!

Remember that it's not only what reverb you use, but how you EQ/filter it BEFORE and also AFTER the reverb. Basically, you cut/remove and boost the frequencies pre-reverb, and clean it up/optimize even further after the reverb.
You can also use SC compression (vocal in key/side) to make the reverb duck a little when there is singing (to avoid cluttering it up too much).

Thanks for enlighten me about RY X!
