This is a really small, but stupid thing that is bugging me :)

I have some rack mounted gear and don't understand the logic of the rails and cage nut protocol. I don't understand why cage nuts are designed to be placed on the outer side of the rail. Surely that makes it easier for the weight of any gear to pull down on them. I'm thinking if the cage nut was threaded the opposite way, and clipped on the inside of the rail, you would still screw from the outside but it would bring the gear closer to the rail for better weight distribution and would mean the rail fixing would be between the cage nut and the gear/screw meaning it could be pulled out and fall off due to weight.

Is it me that's just being daft here or does this little annoyance bug other people too? :)

I just put the cage nut on the inside of a rail, never tried it on the outside, seems like a strange thing to do. :)

Isn't the cage nut supposed to be on the inside? Maybe I'm missing the point.

Then again, you could get those rack stud things and be done with it.
