Ah OK, so if you are already experienced why don't you just play your own stuff? I look at the structure of other peoples music, but I never really play it myself, I'm just interested to know how they did it :)

BTW even the greatest guitar players practice their technique every day, it's different from playing songs. Good luck

My mother was a Concert Pianist in the 50-60'S she made like 3 record. thus it was my duty to learn theory and read music... all i wanted to do was playing in a band and pay music I liked. I learned to play guitar by ear just wanting to play my favourite songs.

my suggestion would be pic out 2 or 3 of songs you like... find the guitar tabs for them... trust me they exist and play along with those songs. learn the rhythm bits first which are just Bar chord most times and go from there. you can tell your getting better when you don't play along with the track and it sounds like the song or when you do and you blend right in :) then you can string em all tother and play 4 or 5 songs none stop.... an easy song to learn to get your chops up and is 9 plus minutes and has 4 different parts is
    Green Day -
Jesus Of Suburbia / City Of The Damned / I Don't Care / Dearly Beloved / Tales Of Another Broken Home
its actually really easy to play but fun too

Here is the Tab for it https://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/g/green_day/jesus_of_suburbia_tab.htm
Heres the song in video form

its a good exercise for beginners learn it in part and put it all together :) good luck

Doom and Sludge, As it is mostly just massive riffage which You can start by playing on just your lowest string, Kind of like the way a bass guitar player hitting only the root notes would play it and take it from there would be my advice.

Now it depends on Your tastes but Black Sabbath (obviously), Melvins, EyeHateGod, Candlemass, Electric Wizard, Khanate, Iron Monkey, Down, Goatsnake, Reverend Bizarre, Charger, Sourveign, Raging Speedhorn...etc. Even stuff by Entombed, Obituary and Six Feet Under as but a few examples often times to me at least deploy some monster heavy doses of doomy/sludgey passages that You could pick it up rather quickly. Ultimately it will take time to get Your palm muting technique down along with Your picking worked out in conjuction with Your fretting hand all synchronized and working as a "team" and the only way to achieve that is through practice.

However even faster stuff as long as You are understanding the rhythms used but only able to play a very scaled down/minimal take on such riffs (Even just hitting one note at the start of each bar) just make sure Your playing the correct root notes and You'll be on Your way to picking things up by ear.

Someone mentioned Nirvana and that is a very good example actually of the type of thing I mean, Since all the "solos" we're just the main and only vocal melody just played on the guitar most of the time, That is the type of learning stuff by ear and a very condensed/minimal approach.

There's plenty of software around that enables You to transpose the pitch if You don't want to down tune and then also retune depending upon whatever band You're wanting to jam along with as well as being able to slow sections down within reason without that many horrendous artefacts as the algorithms are pushed further and further.

You've got to have patience and a metronome is also essential in my very humble honest opinion, Hope that helps some

All the best and to all as always

    Dean

EDIT: How dare I forget, CROWBAR and NEUROSIS, The heaviest matter of all matters, Neurosis are due to drop their latest soon...Can't wait. I've been hooked since I bought Through Silver In Blood on a chance, This was way before I had the internet and most magazines apart from Terrorizer and Zero Tolerance but they weren't easy to get a hold of monthly and I was way to skint to subscribe to such as I wasn't ever 13

Seriously, if you want to get over the "beginners hump", just play something that you've made up that sounds good to you. That way, nothing is outside of your ability. You're going to have to go through a whole process of just messing around with a guitar to gain the flexibility and strength required. You might as well make it fun for yourself without the added pressure of "having to play a song that is known." That will come in time.
