u-he shows physical modeling acoustic drum synthesizer at Superbooth16

U-He is working on a physical modeling acoustic drum synthesizer, which they showcased here at Superbooth16 in Berlin.

The thing already sounds amazingly realistic. During the concert, I was sure that they were using some sort of sample based drum instrument. The obvious approach of the physical modeling approach, though, is making it possible to *play* the synth like a real drum kit.

We are literally spammed with synths but rarely any good virtual drum kit.

 

It would be nice if some developer would create a physical modelling drum synth that sounds realistic. However, for physically modeled drums in general, nobody should write off Image-Line's Drumaxx. I don't find any of their other instruments all that great, but Drumaxx is totally unique in a world saturated with drum machine plugins. You won't get ultra-realistic drums out of it, but it can be tweaked to make wild and wonderful percussive hits, particularly if the tweaking is automated or performed live. I highly recommend it for anybody making IDM or experimental electronic music.

Absolutely!
Drumaxx is still one of my favorites, next to Reason, Maschine, Spark and Ableton's drum/percussion modeling instruments (Tension, Collision etc.).
Still, there's a lot of room for development in terms of specialization on acoustic drum sounds
I might do an Ableton drum modeling rack someday...
