I tried Kaspersky and hated it....slow the machine down like no other (or it might be on an part with mc afee!)
the best by detection rate/resources is avira Antivir ...free or not,
symantec has had a bad time but the new norton is also pretty good

however all these (basically any AV but the one i'll mention in a sec) have to much impact on resources....

so i switched to microsoft's, fairly light and not a resource hog but does the job when needed...basically if you dont download any shit you find and use a bit of common sense its quite enough IMO

when unsure, I also use and recommend emisoft a-squared as a manual scanner on the side as it finds out (almost) everything (most than any other AV for sure..sometimes its the only one to detect a threat) and then decide accordingly..
    http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/

but if you have a 32 bit system..you should get a very light AV and a soft like sandboxie so you can try anything without any risk

with a 64 bits system, this kind of soft cannot guarantee the same quality/level of security (though it's still pretty good)

    The best one is... None.
I've used Avira free and Avast free in the past and both had slows down my computer without alerting me once during three years of "hard-but-clever" surfing (except a lot of false positive from keygens and patchers). They were real PITA instead of protections.
Now I use only Firefox and my router's firewall ("Standard" security level). I never encounter any problem in one year...
So for me, all anti-virus, anti-malwares and software firewalls are useless.

EDIT : As lysergyk said "basically if you dont download any shit you find and use a bit of common sense its quite enough".
    That's the way !

This is exactily why i've asked this question to be honest...every time i open anything the kaspersky icon sort of flashes and everything slows down.......i'm considering all options at the moment....over the years i'm pretty up to speed on the various releases and who's who and how things should be.....Thanks as always for your responses all!!!!

I have used Norton for about the last 10 years, with no problems and it doesn't slow down my machine at all.

whatever you decide you should get read of kaspersky.... *yes*

if you dont have a router wirth firewall like Lord Gaga
the lightest way is to use a sandbox...and a manual scanner in case
of great doubt...and ofc to keep an image of you HD (OS partition) in case something goes horribly wrong

otherwise as i said, MSE is at the moment the AV with the lightest impact on your system (but not the most efficient,
though it should be more than enough for anyone with a brain!)

there's not so many options to choose from actually...

i will not start a debate as it not the point of this thread at all....but obviously you should be more observant...
or as i reckon, you've never used your machine at its real speed as ALL antiviruses (and i mean all) slow down even
the most powerful computers....then depending on what you have the impact might be more or less visible or not matter
to you...but you ALWAYS lose something and the previous versions of norton were quite terrible for that (or should i say terrific  )

I use Norton as it comes free with my ISP... I would agree that previous versions were awful about slowing down and crashing programs, but this one seems to be working alright

Avira free version + common sense when opening files or surfing is all I need.
What I like about Avira is it's high detection rate (can be a hassle for someone else tho) and the fact that it's light

Most of my tunes have at least 30 tracks and in the past a lot more + loads of plugins, I literally push my computer to death and its my opinion and I am entitled to it and you can take it or leave it just as I will yours.

I have used AVAST for the past 6 months - it does not appear to slow down the system and has built in Sandbox features which is handy if you are not sure about running an App.

And Malwarebytes once a week to pick up any stuff that Bitdefender like many others don`t find.

Best out there at the mo I would say is ZoneAlarm Extreme Security

ive found COMODO INTERNET SUITE to be a good shout, its FREE and has everything, Firewall, antivirus, defense and sandbox. and you can enable/disable each individualy to your needs, and it also has a game mode to free up resources....
although at the moment i use comodo strictly for firewall and have PREVX as malware scanner. but il probably just use comodo alone when prevx licence runs out. hope thats a help

oh yeah, and no pop ups fom comodo :)

i think the best thing is to have a dedicated music pc with no protection whatsoever and have another computer or laptop with protection for downloading as the guinee pig to install software and use to go on potentialy damaging websites etc.
