Had a question about after i finish installing plugins to my computer,can the actual folder with(setup/installation/and other misc. stuff) be moved to another hard drive?I need to clear some more space on my SSD and i am not sure if some or all can be moved without causing problems.I'm on WIN 7 64 bit,any help would greatly be appreciated!! Cheers

 

Do you mean the folder where the plugins were installed to? Or the folder that holds installation files the plugins were installed from?
If it's the former, no you can't. If it's the latter, of course you can move installation and setup files wherever you want. Didn't you download them from some other place?

 

short answer, probably yes you can change, the vst folder from a drive to another...

why yes, some vst plugins, are independent, it means the only file it needs is the .dll it self nothing more, others needs more files, and those files are usually installed in a system folder, wish it wont be moved...

some vst, saves their places using the register, those will be a problem...

try to move the folder, and lunch a vst scan and test with the new location, if everything works you good to go, if few dosent work just re-install them...

Yes the destination folder,I understand some folders like @MrLyannMusic said use the registry,but others that have only the install/setup and anything else that doesnt pertain to the plug in operation.

 

most of the VST can be moved to new locations .
but if you have some problem after moving the plugins , you can open regedit then search the plugin which make problems
then just relocated the Path to new Path .

 

You can move the folders. You just need to make a new shortcut on your desktop that has that uses the new file path. Just delete the old shortcut, and after you move the file find the .exe file in the folder and create a new shortcut. If you move your VST folder you need to add the new file path in your DAW.

 

yes you can. I moved all my plugins from one drive to another because it was full, and no probs

 

For the most part yes. As you can see from the following registry key entries, I am steering installations to where I
prefer to locate VST folders. This works for installers that are done correctly and those with options.

Some installers still ignore this and require intervention on your part. Cakewalk is really bad for this.
Also the latest Waves install scheme ignores this and installs to C:\Program Files\VST...

VST3 plugins so far are always installed to the correct location. You can also create folders to better organize
DAW plugin lists.

If I understand well, Acronis is what you need. Clone any Drive and use it as original. Works 100%!

 

You can also call it whatever you like dont need call it
D:\\Steinberg\\VstPlugins64"
I skip Steinberg i also have a space after Vst so it look like "Vst Plugins" and as i have both 32 bit and 64 bit plugins installed one folder is called Vst plugins x64 and they both are on harddrive H so it will look like this in regedit H:\Vst Plugins
But you can call it X and Y if you want or just Plugins whatever you like
