I have a lot of time invested in my macbook between the daw and vst installs.. What program will make an exact duplicate so if my computer is fried i'll have a backup somewhere on an external I can install on a new computer? Thanks in advance.

 

With mac just use time machine.

 

I have a hackintosh and use win 10

 

Use Active@Boot Disk. Easy and flawless with many other functions for moving files around (pre)OS.

 

Fro Windows use Drive Image XML, free and solid. I bought acronis and regretted it.

 

This is the best and the fastest solution I have found for windows

I'm happy with Acronis, although I didn't buy it. I use different versions on different OS (I like the older versions better) and they're all compatible, incremental backups work fine.

 

I swear ( no profanity) with Reflect Macrium it has save my ass many times with client machines. I used to be a big user of Acronis untill they screwed it up big time!!! and I have been on Macrium ever since.

It was worth every penny, has made me a lot of money but I sure as hell don't see that money as the girlfriend stashes it away....

3 words... Carbon Copy Cloner. Hands down the best and most reliable way to make a bootable clone of your Mac in my experience. I've been backing up and restoring for years and it's rock solid. I don't recommend time machine. You can't boot from those backups and it takes resources doing incremental backups in the background. Just turn Time Machine off and do a Carbon Copy Cloner backup every so often. You'll thank the heavens having a bootable cloned backup if anything goes wrong or your laptop get's stolen or you have a hard drive failure or some other unthinkable catastrophe. Another good free option is SuperDuper but I've never used it. Macrium reflect is for Windows only so if you're on a Mac like the original poster use CCC.

I know I won't bring anything to the table, but yes, Carbon Copy Cloner.

 

CCC do bootable backups, for your hacktosh just install bootloader.

 

The free V6 version only does full and differential, incremental is included in the paid version.Gotta have something to persuade punters to pay.

Win10: macrium reflect / clonezilla
OSX: carbon copy cloner / superduper! / clonezilla

 

and the reason I say CCC over super duper (which is a FINE program I have used for years and years), is that I believe, unless something has changed (and I mentioned this on another thread here), is that CCC ALSO backs up the Restore Volume on OSX which super duper (last time I looked) does NOT...., so if that is in anyway important to you, I would give that the slight edge. I used Superduper for almost a decade without problems, but moving to the new OSX's, they contain a recovery volume.... which you might want to have....

 

The easiest thing to do is pop in an external drive, reboot to CMD R and then open Disk Utility and then restore to the ext drive the drive. It is bootable and preserves everything and drop dead simple.

 

And does this do a differential or incremental backup?
Does this do an automated backup at scheduled times?
If not then i would suggest that a regular backup program is a much better bet.

 

I've got the full version, but I still couldn't find it. I'm gonna ask google, but feel free to enlighten me.

Edit: Alright, I got it. But I'd still be interested in why not to use the brand leader.
