I've gone the I2M route and for ambient stuff it's fun and all well and good, but with basses and plucks it just feels soooo weird to play those synths with a guitar. any suggestions? I have also had my eye on the kitara even before it had a name, but they are never in stock.

First of all I think that you should specify that you are talking about this one. The limitations of guitar to midi conversion are well known. For low frequencies the system must analyse at least one cycle and maybe the transient is not clean and the delay increases a lot. You have to play in advance. Maybe the new Roland stuff is better and it's polyphonic. However a lot of great guitarists that fell in love with guitar to midi have abandoned it. But for ambient and experimental music I think it is ok! I play a mono instrument in a reaktor patch and the frequency of the instrument is converted directly in the frequency of the oscillators bypassing midi... but it's mono.
